Here’s why PSG have not been affected by FFP regulations

PSG had arguably the greatest transfer window performance of all time, signing Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos, Gini Wijnaldum and Gianluigi Donnarumma on free transfers. They also invested in the arrival of Nuno Mendes and Achraf Hakimi from Sporting and Inter respectively, constructing the best squad that Europe has seen in years.

But, with so many signings, and especially the presence of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe at the club, the big question asked was how are PSG still able to comply with FFP regulations?

When considering the rules of the Financial Fair Play system, what’s important to remember is that the owners must be able to show that they are able to cover any losses incurred in signing players. And with Qatar pumping money into the PSG project the way they have, Nasser Al-Khelaifi and co can easily show that they can recover any expenses from their business.

As a result, PSG have the second most expensive squad in the world, 2 million behind Manchester City, whose team is valued at 1 billion Euros. The presence of captivating talents like Messi, Neymar, Mbappe, Ramos and Navas in the same team makes sponsorship deals worth more, and as a result, PSG are capable of running a strong business alongside their operations as a football club.

While their Ligue 1 squad is an elaborate 33 players, their Champions League squad will have a cap and will possibly leave out players like Layvin Kurzawa, Rafinha and Juan Bernat. The main objective for Mauricio Pochettino now, is to deliver the Champions League trophy with the best players in every position at his disposal.
