Barcelona has paid the €120 million (£108 million) buyout clause to release Griezmann from his Atletico Madrid contract. He’s put pen to paper on a five-year deal, through to 30 June 2024 with a buyout clause of €800 million.
The 28-year-old turned down a move to Barca in June last year as he opted to extend his Atletico contract. However, Griezmann informed the Madrid side of his desire to leave the Spanish capital following five years.
Griezmann becomes the world’s sixth most expensive transfer behind Ousmane Dembele, Joao Felix, Kylian Mbappe, Philippe Coutinho and Neymar.
He has enjoyed his five seasons at Atletico Madrid following his move from Real Sociedad in 2014. He scored 133 goals in all competitions during his prolific spell in the Spanish capital, where he won the Europa League, UEFA Super Cup, and the Spanish Super Cup.
The 28-year-old becomes the club’s fourth signing of the summer after Emerson, Frenkie de Jong and Neto. They remain in the market for another attacker with Neymar heavily linked with a sensational return to Catalunya.
Ernesto Valverde now boasts a wealth of attacking options in the shape of club captain Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho, Ousmane Dembele, Malcom and of course, Griezmann.
Barcelona are expected to present Griezmann at the Camp Nou next week, with the club set to announce official details of his presentation in due course.
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid already have signed the replacement for their departing Frenchman in the form of Joao Felix. The Portugal international was brought in from SL Benfica earlier this month for a fee of €126 Million.
