Oppo has announced the setting up of a new camera innovation lab at its research and development facility in Hyderabad, India. The setup is seemingly targeted at developing the camera software prowess for Oppo, and the company will work towards developing specific use cases for its camera AI algorithms. Some key areas of development that the new imaging innovation lab will work on include improving night videography, as well as adapting Oppo camera performance to various ambient light temperatures.
The lab is designed to develop localized features, camera solutions using AI and focus on developing imaging software for a better user experience. The Indian team will also be leading innovations for other countries, including the Middle East, Africa, South Asia, Japan, and Europe. Further, the lab will also work towards developing solutions for video, still photography, and research on Full Dimension Fusion (FDF) Portrait Video System technology.
On this note, Oppo states that a number of imaging effects to be developed at its camera innovation center in Hyderabad will be specifically tuned to suit the Indian skin tone. The facility will also work on improving Oppo’s Full Dimension Fusion (FDF) portrait video enhancement algorithms, in order to make such videos look artistic without appearing too artificial.
Tasleem Arif, VP and head of Oppo India R&D, said upon the announcement, “While we work towards elevating the overall camera experience for our users, our focus is on localization of global solutions and developing new solutions which can be globalized. What we will be developing in the India camera lab will end up in the hands of Oppo users across the globe.”
At the moment, it is not clear as to when might the efforts of the Oppo India camera R&D lab show up in the company’s smartphones. Given the focus on made-in India as a key way to appeal to more buyers in the market, the company may look to feature specific branding or other indicators to identify the features that this facility will come up with.
