Front cameras in smartphones have become very important, mostly owing to the selfie-craze that prevails today. Several accessories such as selfie sticks have also been developed for providing an enhanced selfie camera experience.
The latest development when it comes to front cameras in devices is the integration of under-display front cameras. A few devices have already been released with this technology such as the Xiaomi Mi MIX 4, the concept is still in its inception stages.
Despite featuring an Under-display camera, the Xiaomi Mi MIX 4 may not be as good in terms of front camera performance, a Weibo post by an Executive at the company has shed some light on the Mi MIX 4’s front camera.
Senior VP at Xiaomi, William Lu, highlighted that the strong points of the MIX 4, but also mentioned that devices offering punch-hole cameras are more effective and offer more satisfaction to selfie enthusiasts.
The Mi MIX 4 offers a bigger screen and an amazingly immersive display experience. If you are a selfie enthusiast, the Mi MIX 4 may not be the device for you, going back in time, the ZTE Axon 20, if you recall it was the first device to feature the under-display camera tech but it offered a mediocre selfie experience. Axon did make it up with the Axon 30 that was released later on.
Since the Mi MIX 4 is Xiaomi’s first attempt at a UD camera technology, we expect some improvements in subsequent devices. The camera technology deployed in the Mi MIX 4 is called Camera Under Panel or CUP, it offers a full screen for front shots, the under-display technology is still developing, we are bound to see further improvements in this regard and several OEMs are actively investing their time and resources to ensure they develop their own versions of this technology.
