Manchester City are in the final stages of signing Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish, according to renowned transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.

The two clubs are in the final stages of sorting out the paperwork for the signing and fans can expect the official announcement in the next few days. Grealish has agreed on a contract till 2026, and Villa are seemingly accepting the £100 million bid that City have placed for their star player.

The deal will be confirmed by the end of the week at the latest, since that is the deadline placed by Villa for the deal. Despite signing a new contract with his boyhood club last year, Villa were prepared to offer him a new deal with a significant pay rise if he would stay at the club.

Grealish currently earns £120,000 a week and is the highest-paid player in the Villa squad. The new contract would have seen him receive £200,000 per week, but his decision to join City means that the contract offer will no longer apply.

The deal going through will make the 25-year-old playmaker the most expensive British player of all time. The current record is held by Harry Maguire, making the move from Leicester City to Manchester United. Despite the rise in finances, City can offer Grealish Champions League football that Villa are not close to.

The Midlands club have signed Emiliano Buendia and Leon Bailey as potential replacements for their number 10.
