Nokia Alleges Oppo of Patent Infringement for Using Tech Without a License Agreement

Nokia is among those companies which are known for suing various companies across the globe and in most of the cases the company has achieved proving its point and winning the lawsuit. Earlier Nokia filed serious allegations against Lenovo and Daimler and succeeded in winning the lawsuit and gaining the additional compensation for patent infringement. Now in a new report, it has been reported that Nokia is planning to file a lawsuit against Oppo for using its patents. So far the relation between both the technology giants was smooth and Oppo was paying compensation to Nokia for using its patents.

As per speculation, this contract just got over. Now, as Economic Times reports, Nokia has confirmed that Oppo has rejected the offer of renewing this contract. Even though the company has rejected the offer, it still continues to use those patents because of which Nokia sued Oppo in multiple countries.

As Nokia has been present in the smartphone business for very long, the company holds a number of patents under its name. It has signed royalty-bearing agreements with other companies as well. These include Samsung, Apple, LG, Lenovo and even Blackberry.

“We have been negotiating the renewal of our patent licensing agreement with Oppo but unfortunately they have rejected our fair and reasonable offers. Litigation is always our last resort and we have offered to enter into independent and neutral arbitration to amicably resolve the matter. We still believe this would be the most constructive way forward,” Nokia said in its statement.

Reports have said that Oppo has found Nokia’s actions to be ‘Shocking’. The Chinese smartphone maker also accused Nokia of disregarding the patent licensing under fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms.

“OPPO respects and protects its own and third-party intellectual property rights, and has been committed to benign patent licensing cooperation in the industry. OPPO opposes unreasonable consultations such as using litigation as a tool”, it said.

Meanwhile, HMD Global is planning to launch new smartphones under the Nokia brand and the launch is said to happen on November 11th. The company is yet to confirm anything but the launch and products so it’s advisable to take this information with a pinch of salt.
