Samsung announces more details of its PM1743 SSD supporting PCIe 5.0

In terms of memory devices, Samsung has been a leader with its innovative ideas, making it one of the top manufacturers of memory modules. Recently the South Korean-based tech giant published some preliminary details about its enterprise-grade SSDs. These SSDs feature a PCIe 5.0 x4 interface which has just started to be implemented in the market.

Samsung has announced that the storage drives will be available in an E3.S 1T form-factor within a year. They will be available for users with the first PCIe 5.0-supporting enterprise platforms, like AMD’s EPYC Genoa and Intel’s Sapphire Rapids. In retrospect, Samsung states that the SSD’s will be available before the upcoming enterprise platforms from Intel and AMD hit the market.

From the details released by Samsung, its PM1743 solid-state drive will be based on the company’s proprietary controller and the 6th Generation TLC V-NAND memory. The upcoming SSD storage is rated for up to one drive writes per day (1 DWPD); Samsung has designed the new storage module for mixed workloads.

Coming to its specifications, the PM1743 SSD drive will feature a PCIe Gen 5 x4 (single-port) or dual x2 (dual-port) interface and will be coming in an E3.S 1T form-factor designed. The form factor increases the storage density in a server. The company has not yet released any information or benchmark charts about the performance of the PM1743, but the theoretical peak throughput for a PCIe 5.0 x4 interface is about 15.7 GB/s.

Nowadays, most SSDs designed for enterprise come in a 2.5-inch form-factor with a SAS or U.2 interface. However, with an EDSFF E3 form-factor, Samsung will be able to increase the capacity of its drives, enabling them with higher storage density for next-generation servers running AMD’s Genoa and Intel’s Sapphire Rapids processors.
