MaliSX2 Emulator Boost: Vulkan Driver Heads to Dolphin and HakuX

Reports suggest the MaliSX2 emulator boost could reach beyond a single app. According to Android Authority, the Vulkan driver that reportedly debuted in ARMSX2 is heading to Dolphin and HakuX. MaliSX2 is reportedly a custom Vulkan driver for Arm Mali GPUs—the closest thing non-Snapdragon phones have to Turnip.

For years, that gap determined who could emulate and who couldn’t. Dolphin runs GameCube and Wii software, while HakuX targets original Xbox titles. Both have leaned on Qualcomm hardware because Adreno GPUs had Turnip, a community driver that reportedly delivered frames the stock driver couldn’t. Mali devices had no equivalent. Now, at least in principle, they do.

What the MaliSX2 Emulator Boost Changes for Dolphin and HakuX

Early reports make the technical pitch sound simple. MaliSX2 replaces the system graphics driver on non-Snapdragon hardware, sitting between the emulator and the GPU instead of leaving every decision to the vendor driver.

It debuted inside ARMSX2 last month. The reported port to two much bigger emulators is what matters now. Dolphin and HakuX still have no confirmed rollout date. The hardware reach is the real story. Mali GPUs power MediaTek phones, older Pixel handsets, older Samsung devices and current flagship Galaxy tablets. In India, that includes a large part of the mid-range market, where MediaTek Dimensity chips do the heavy lifting.

Why Snapdragon Chips Held the Emulator Advantage

Turnip made “Snapdragon for emulation” a rule, not just a preference. The driver offers performance gains, compatibility improvements and bug fixes absent from the shipped system driver. A large community has also refined it for years.

Emulator developers tuned their renderers around Turnip because that’s where the users were. Android Authority’s early look at MaliSX2 is refreshingly blunt about the project’s current state: > “We’re not seeing a significant performance boost during our brief testing, but it’s still early days for the project.” That caveat matters. A driver port builds infrastructure; it doesn’t flip a frame-rate switch. Turnip didn’t arrive quickly either. Early builds of any Vulkan driver typically tackle crashes and rendering glitches before adding speed.

What Happens Next

The first test is compatibility. If MaliSX2 gets GameCube and Xbox titles to boot and render correctly on Mali hardware, it will have cleared the hardest hurdle.

Performance tuning usually comes later, once developers have a stable base and bug reports from real devices. Worth noting: custom Adreno drivers followed the same path, with community builds eventually outperforming vendor drivers in specific emulators. Mali may not follow that curve, though. MediaTek’s driver stack is also less documented than Qualcomm’s.

The Bottom Line on the MaliSX2 Emulator Boost

Anyone who bought a MediaTek phone assuming emulation was off the table may soon think again.
