Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) leads the list of India’s largest private employers with 5,93,798 employees, according to a post by Sunil Gurjar on X on October 13, 2026. Reliance Industries comes second with 4,19,911 employees, followed by Infosys with 3,28,594.
The list shows how much of India’s private-sector employment is concentrated in IT services, banking and a few large conglomerates.

What the List Tells Us
Five of the ten companies are IT services firms: TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech and Tech Mahindra, with LTIMindtree making it six. Three are banks (HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank), and Reliance Industries is the only conglomerate on the list. The top three alone employ about 13.4 lakh people, according to the figures in the post.
TCS leads by a wide margin. It has about 1.74 lakh more employees than Reliance, and about 2.65 lakh more than Infosys. That gap explains why TCS hiring and layoff decisions get so much attention across the Indian job market.
Why Headcount Figures Differ
Employee numbers change every quarter, and companies count staff differently. Some include contract workers or subsidiaries, and some report numbers for the end of a financial year, while others report the latest quarter. The figure for HCLTech is given as 2,23,000+, which suggests an approximate number. Because of this, two lists on the same day can show slightly different counts. What It Means for Job Seekers
Large employers hire in bulk from campuses and through experienced-hire drives, so they remain a common first stop for graduates. At the same time, many IT firms have slowed hiring as AI tools change how work gets done. If you are applying, it helps to follow the quarterly results, where each company reports headcount and attrition, and to look beyond the top ten for mid-size firms that are growing.
What Is Not Confirmed
These points are not confirmed in the post:
- The date or financial period for each headcount figure.
- Whether contract workers and subsidiaries are included.
- The exact HCLTech number, as it is shown as 2,23,000+.
- Whether public-sector firms or the Indian Army and Railways, which employ more people but are not private, are excluded on purpose.

What Changes Year to Year
Headcount figures move with hiring, attrition and acquisitions. In recent years IT services firms have grown more slowly than in the boom period, and some have reduced headcount for several quarters in a row. Banks, on the other hand, have kept adding staff as branch networks and digital teams expand. That is why the order of positions six to ten can change from one quarter to the next.
To compare fairly, always check the financial period and whether the number covers only India or the entire company. Many IT firms also have large workforces overseas.
