Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, First Movie Set in Westeros, Scheduled for June 1, 2029

Westeros is finally coming to the big screen. Warner Bros. has officially dated “Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest,” the first-ever feature film set in George R.R. Martin’s fantasy universe, confirming a June 1, 2029 theatrical release.

What the Film Is About

“Aegon’s Conquest” will chronicle Aegon I Targaryen — also known as Aegon the Conqueror — as he sets out to unite the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. Alongside his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys Targaryen, and with the help of their three dragons, Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes, Aegon conquered six of the seven kingdoms and ultimately became the first king of the Targaryen dynasty to rule from the Iron Throne. The story draws from Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” the same source material that inspired “House of the Dragon,” and marks the first time Aegon the Conqueror has ever been depicted on screen.

Behind the Camera

Owen Harris, who directed three episodes of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” — including the acclaimed “Trial of Seven” episode — will direct the film. The screenplay comes from Beau Willimon, the Emmy-nominated creator of “House of Cards” and a writer on “Andor,” who also penned the films “The Ides of March” and “Mary Queen of Scots.” No cast has been announced yet, and a production start date has not been revealed.

The Earliest Chapter in the Franchise Timeline

Set roughly 300 years before the events of the original “Game of Thrones” series, “Aegon’s Conquest” will become the earliest story told in the franchise’s live-action timeline, predating “House of the Dragon” and “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” alike. The story picks up in the aftermath of the Doom of Valyria, following the Targaryen exiles as they arrive in Westeros with the last surviving dragons in the world and face off against a divided continent with little means to resist them.

The film represents the latest chapter in Warner Bros. and HBO’s ongoing expansion of the “Game of Thrones” universe since the flagship series concluded in 2019, joining “House of the Dragon” and “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” as part of that continued build-out. It also lands amid a notable corporate transition, with Warner Bros.’ theatrical slate — including “Aegon’s Conquest” — set to pass to Paramount as part of an ownership handover affecting dozens of dated releases between October 2026 and 2029.
