The Ganges Grandmasters have secured their inaugural Global Chess League (GCL) title, defeating defending champions Alpine APL Pipers 7-5 in a closely contested final held in Bengaluru on Sunday. The victory was notably propelled by Ian Nepomniachtchi’s decisive win against world number one Magnus Carlsen.
The Grandmasters, who had topped the league stage based on game points, concluded the two-leg final with a 7-5 aggregate score after drawing the opening leg 3-3 with white pieces. In a separate playoff, FYERS American Gambits claimed third place by overcoming CheQ Mumba Masters 7.5-4.5 across their two-leg encounter.

Ganges Decisive Second Leg Performance
The Global Chess League (GCL), a joint initiative of Tech Mahindra (https://www.techmahindra.com/) and FIDE, witnessed a season marked by fierce competition, with all six teams vying for the top four spots until the penultimate round. The Pipers, having narrowly made it to the final after the Mumba Masters defeated the Gambits in the final league game, were unable to defend their title against the Grandmasters.
The second leg of the final saw the Pipers, with white pieces, positioned to potentially retain their crown. Carlsen appeared to be in a strong position on the icon board, but a positional error on move 28 allowed Nepomniachtchi to seize the advantage, which he held to secure a critical win. Stavroula Tsolakidou’s subsequent victory over Koneru Humpy further cemented the Ganges Grandmasters’ triumph.
In the first match of the final, Levon Aronian provided an early lead for the Grandmasters by defeating Anish Giri. While other boards resulted in draws, Volodar Murzin’s win against Luke Leon Mendonca under pressure allowed the Pipers to level the first leg at 3-3.
Nepomniachtchi commented on his crucial game, acknowledging a moment of luck. “I was in trouble and hoping for a blunder, which he did,” he stated, also highlighting the team’s strong spirit throughout the tournament.
Third Place Playoff Concludes
The FYERS American Gambits, having lost to the Mumba Masters in a preceding league game, bounced back convincingly to secure third place. Nihal Sarin, who had experienced a loss in the previous day’s play, delivered a strong performance, winning both his games against M Pranesh. Marc’andria Maurizzi also achieved a double victory.
The Gambits, opting to play black first after winning the toss, won the initial match 3.5-2.5. In the subsequent match, the team maintained control, with icon player Javokhir Sindarov drawing against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, followed by further wins from Nihal and Maurizzi, solidifying their third-place finish. Sarin expressed satisfaction with his recovery, stating, “I was happy that I could recover well after yesterday’s loss to win both the matches.”
Tournament Highlights and Engagement
Stavroula Tsolakidou was recognized as the Player of the Tournament for her consistent performance, scoring 21.5 points with six wins and three draws across 12 games. D Harika of the Mumba Masters maintained an undefeated record throughout the tournament, accumulating 18.5 points from 12 matches (four wins, eight draws).
GCL Season 4 reported significant fan engagement, with venues consistently at capacity. The league’s YouTube subscriber base reportedly increased fivefold, and social media following more than doubled during the tournament.
GCL Commissioner Gourav Rakshit reflected on the fan response, stating that the “incredible fan engagement and support” reinforced the league’s objective to foster a strong community around chess and bring fans closer to the game.
