Indian football’s second tier is gearing up for a bigger, bolder season. The Indian Football League Governing Council has confirmed October 30 as the start date for the 2026-27 season, with Nagaland and Odisha added as new venues, expanding the competition’s footprint across the country.

Full Home-and-Away Season on the Cards

The decision was finalised after the Governing Council met at the Football House in New Delhi, with representatives of all 11 participating clubs in attendance to review the previous campaign and finalize plans for the upcoming one. Unlike the truncated 2025-26 edition, this season is set to be a full-fledged home-and-away campaign, giving clubs and fans a much longer, more competitive calendar to look forward to.

Three-Foreigner Rule Approved

In a key regulatory update, the Governing Council approved a rule permitting a maximum of three foreign players on the pitch at a time during IFL matches for the upcoming season. The move is expected to strike a balance between international quality and opportunities for domestic talent.

New Venues: Nagaland and Odisha Join the Fold

Two new states are entering the IFL map. Nagaland and Odisha have been welcomed as new venues for the 2026-27 season, further expanding the league’s footprint across the country. Officials believe this geographical expansion will take the league to new football audiences and strengthen its presence nationwide.

Broadcast Talks with Prasar Bharati

Ahead of the Governing Council meeting, IFL club representatives and AIFF Deputy Secretary General M Satyanarayan met Prasar Bharati CEO Gaurav Dwivedi in New Delhi to discuss the broadcast partnership for the upcoming season. The last campaign already saw strong traction, with viewership four times higher than the 2024-25 season, giving both sides reason for optimism heading into this expanded edition.
