Khalid Jamil calls up Som Kumar to the Indian Football Team for the Upcoming Friendlies

21-year-old goalkeeper Som Kumar’s unusual journey from the streets of Bengaluru to the rugged pitches of Slovenia has officially caught the eye of Indian national team head coach Khalid Jamil. Selected for his maiden senior call-up, Kumar joins a 26-member squad tasked with a blockbuster international window against Panama, Brazil, and Uruguay.

Som Kumar’s key details

The Road Less Traveled

While most Indian football prodigies dream of securing a lucrative Indian Super League contract, Som Kumar forged a different path. Moving to Slovenia as a teenager, he developed his reflexes and distribution in the youth systems of NK Bravo, NK Krka, and Olimpija Ljubljana. This relentless pursuit of European football at a young age demanded immense grit. Adapting to a different climate, tactical philosophy, and physical demands, Kumar quietly built his resume while representing India at the U17 and U20 levels, including the successful 2022 SAFF U20 Championship campaign.

His brief, high-profile return to India in 2024 with Kerala Blasters showcased his undeniable talent. He made an immediate impact in the Durand Cup, registering consecutive clean sheets before a severe head injury momentarily halted his momentum. Prioritizing consistent development over comfort, he returned to the European circuit and currently anchors the defense for Slovenian side ND Slovan.

A Massive Test Against Global Giants

Jamil’s decision to include the 21-year-old marks a significant shift in recognizing overseas developmental pathways. The magnitude of this call-up cannot be understated. Following the Panama clash in Bengaluru, India travels to Kolkata to host five-time world champions Brazil, followed by two-time champions Uruguay. Training to stop shots from some of the world’s most elite attackers provides invaluable exposure. For Kumar, sharing the dressing room with veterans like Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and potentially facing South American heavyweights is a transformative career opportunity.

If Kumar impresses during this camp, India may have secured a technically gifted, European-trained custodian for the next decade.
