Something’s shifting under the hood of India’s car market. Petrol vehicles, long the default choice for buyers, just posted a sharp decline in July — and the E20 fuel rollout is squarely at the center of the story.
What Happened to Petrol Car Sales?
Petrol’s share of passenger vehicle sales fell to around 41-41.7% in July 2026, down from 47.6-48.11% just a year earlier — a drop of roughly 6% year-on-year. Meanwhile, diesel edged up marginally to about 17.73-18%, and alternative fuels like CNG and EVs gained meaningful ground.

Petrol Car Sales Skid
| Fuel Type | July 2026 Share | July 2025 Share |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol | ~41-41.7% | ~48.1% |
| Diesel | ~17.7-18% | ~17.75% |
| CNG | ~24% | ~21% |
| EVs | ~8% | ~5-6.6% |
Why Are Buyers Hesitant About Petrol?
According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), dealer surveys show consumers delaying petrol purchases or exploring alternatives due to concerns around E20 fuel compatibility, fuel economy, and long-term engine effects — especially in older vehicles. Notably, FADA’s Sai Giridhar clarified that dealers haven’t received a single confirmed complaint linking vehicle issues directly to E20 despite servicing thousands of models monthly, attributing much of the anxiety to misinformation and a lack of clear consumer communication.
Diesel’s Quiet Comeback
Diesel’s resurgence isn’t just about E20 worries. Rising petrol prices, the continued popularity of mid-size and full-size SUVs where diesel remains widely available, and a wave of new diesel-powered launches — including the Mahindra XUV 3XO, Tata Curvv, Harrier, Safari, and Hyundai Creta — have all strengthened diesel’s appeal for buyers with higher annual mileage. Some manufacturers report diesel now accounts for up to 40% of their India sales.
The Bigger Fuel-Mix Shift
This isn’t happening in isolation. India’s overall automobile retail sales hit an all-time July high across every category, with total industry sales reaching 2.59 million units, up 26% year-on-year. EV retail sales also touched a record 327,901 units in July, pushing overall EV penetration to about 12.7%, up from 9.6% a year ago. The trend reflects a broader move toward alternative fuels as India continues its push toward ethanol-blended fuel adoption nationwide.
