On This Day: How Michael Phelps Became the Greatest Olympian of All Time

On July 31, 2012, at the London Olympics, Michael Phelps etched his name permanently into sporting history. By anchoring the U.S. team to gold in the 4x200m freestyle relay, Phelps claimed his 19th Olympic medal — officially making him the most decorated Olympian of all time, surpassing a record that had stood for nearly five decades.

Michael Phelps: Overview

The Record-Breaking Night

Phelps’ path to history wasn’t without drama. Earlier that same evening, he was edged out by South Africa’s Chad le Clos in the 200m butterfly, missing out on becoming the first male swimmer to win the same event three Olympics in a row. The narrow silver still tied him with Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina’s long-standing record of 18 career medals.

Just hours later, Phelps sealed his place in history for good. Anchoring the relay with a commanding lead built by his teammates, he powered the U.S. team to gold, officially breaking Latynina’s record with medal number 19 — a mark that had stood since 1964.

Building an Unmatched Legacy

Phelps’ journey to this moment began at the 2004 Athens Games, where he won six golds and two bronzes as a 19-year-old. He followed that with a historic eight-gold haul at the 2008 Beijing Olympics — a single-Games record that remains unbeaten. London 2012 added to that legend, and by the time he retired after Rio 2016, his final tally stood at a staggering 28 Olympic medals, 23 of them gold.

Why This Record Still Matters

More than a decade later, Phelps’ medal count remains untouched, and few athletes across any sport are considered realistic threats to break it. His dominance across three Olympic cycles — spanning butterfly, freestyle, and individual medley events — cemented swimming’s biggest legacy in modern Olympic history.
