Dada – The Sourav Ganguly Story: Rajkummar Rao’s Ganguly Reveal Sparks Fan Fury

Some birthday gifts make headlines for the right reasons. This one made headlines for a much messier one. On Sourav Ganguly’s 54th birthday, Rajkummar Rao unveiled his first look as the legendary former India captain in the upcoming biopic Dada — and instead of pure celebration, the internet responded with side-eyes and ChatGPT jokes.

What Sourav Ganguly’s Poster Shows

The image recreates one of Indian cricket’s most iconic moments — Ganguly’s shirtless jersey-waving celebration on the Lord’s balcony after India’s dramatic NatWest Trophy win over England in 2002. It’s a moment burned into the memory of every Indian cricket fan, so the pressure on this first look was always going to be high.

Why Fans Are Divided

Rajkummar Rao has built a reputation for disappearing into real-life roles — from Shahid to his recent turn as lawyer Ujjwal Nikam in Prahaar, this marks his seventh biographical performance. That track record is exactly why expectations were sky-high.

But a section of fans felt the poster fell flat, with comments comparing the visual to AI-generated art and calling it underwhelming for a cricketer of Ganguly’s stature. Ganguly himself remains one of India’s most celebrated captains — his Wikipedia profile details a career that includes leading India to the 2003 World Cup final and multiple ICC Champions Trophy campaigns.

The Bigger Picture

Criticism aside, the buzz itself proves people care deeply about how this story gets told. A biopic on someone nicknamed the “Maharaja of Indian Cricket” was always going to be scrutinized frame by frame.
