WhatsApp Finally Lets You Ditch Your Phone Number for a Username

For years, the one thing tying your WhatsApp identity to the real world was your phone number, whether you liked it or not. That’s about to change. WhatsApp has announced that users will soon get the option to be found and contacted through a unique username instead, closing what the company itself calls a long-standing privacy blind spot. The Meta-owned messaging app, which boasts more than 3 billion users globally, has started allowing people to reserve unique usernames ahead of the feature’s official rollout later this year. Until now, anyone with your phone number could contact you on WhatsApp, a setup that’s made the app a less attractive option for users prioritizing privacy compared to apps with more flexible identity controls.

According to WhatsApp’s VP of product Alice Newton-Rex, the company designed this specifically as a core privacy feature. Once live, people will need to know your exact username to message you for the first time, there won’t be a searchable directory, and the app won’t auto-suggest usernames as you type, all measures meant to prevent unwanted contact while still keeping the door open for people you choose to share your handle with.

Usernames must be between three and 35 characters, and to prevent impersonation, WhatsApp says it will withhold names associated with celebrities, public figures, and government entities. Businesses and creators who already have verified handles on Instagram or Facebook will get first dibs on claiming matching usernames within WhatsApp, a smart move that should reduce confusion across Meta’s family of apps.

Newton-Rex noted the company opened reservations early precisely because catchy handles tend to get claimed fast, so anyone hoping for a clean, simple username might want to move quickly once registration opens.
