Every June, a sleepy lakeside town in France turns into the beating heart of the animation world — and this year, Netflix showed up with one of its biggest hauls yet. The Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2026 runs from June 21–27, and Netflix is using the stage to flex everything from a Brad Bird sci-fi noir to a full-blown Willy Wonka spin-off.
If you only know Annecy as “that animation thing,” here’s the quick context: it’s the world’s most prestigious animation festival, and 2026 opens with the world premiere of Minions & Monsters. You can read the full festival rundown on Wikipedia. Netflix’s own presentations run Tuesday through Thursday, riding high after a year that saw KPop Demon Hunters become the streamer’s most-watched original ever.
Netflix’s Annecy 2026 Lineup at a Glance
| Title | What It Is | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Ray Gunn | Brad Bird’s sci-fi detective animated film | First major Bird project since The Incredibles 2 |
| Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory | Taika Waititi-led Wonka spin-off series | A grown-up, edgier take on a beloved classic |
| Ghostbusters | New animated series from Jason Reitman & Gil Kenan | Franchise canon expands into animation |
| Alley Cats | Ricky Gervais’ adult animated comedy | Gervais’ first major animation project |
| The One Piece | Anime adaptation of the manga giant | Huge built-in global fanbase |
| Blue Eye Samurai S2 | Returns after award-sweeping Season 1 | One of Netflix’s most critically loved shows |
| KPop Demon Hunters | Outdoor sing-along screening by Lake Annecy | Marks one year since its record-breaking debut |
The Highlights, Broken Down
Ray Gunn is the one animation nerds are buzzing about. Brad Bird hasn’t led an original animated film in years, and early concept art teased at Annecy hints at a moody, retro-futuristic detective world — closer to The Incredibles‘ stylishness than anything cutesy.
Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory flips the Roald Dahl story on its head: Waititi’s Wonka has just been released from prison (yes, really) and returns to a factory under threat from a new generation of “rotten kids.” It’s a bold, slightly unhinged reinvention rather than a straight remake.
Ghostbusters finally gets its animated due, with franchise veterans Reitman, Kenan and Dan Aykroyd attached. Annecy hosted the first official sneak peek, including a release-year confirmation that fans had been begging for.
Alley Cats, Ricky Gervais’ new animated comedy, marks his first serious swing at the format — expect the same dry, button-pushing humor that built his TV career, just with a fresh visual language.
On the anime side, Netflix doubled down hard: The One Piece anime adaptation, Blue Eye Samurai Season 2, Sparks of Tomorrow, The Ribbon Hero, and Bass X Machina all got dedicated spotlight time, cementing Netflix’s anime strategy as a long-term bet rather than a side hustle.
And then there’s the moment built purely for fans: an outdoor sing-along screening of KPop Demon Hunters by Lake Annecy, celebrating one year since the film became a genuine cultural phenomenon. If you’ve been keeping up with its record-breaking run, our coverage of Netflix’s biggest animated wins digs deeper into how it happened.
This isn’t an isolated flex either — Netflix has been steadily stacking its animation slate all year, the same way it recently wrapped up The Amazing Digital Circus with a theatrical-to-streaming finale. Annecy is simply where all that momentum gets shown off in one place.
