Leicester City have won the FA Cup for the first time in their history, beating Chelsea 1-0 at Wembley Stadium. The Foxes went ahead thanks to a thunderous strike from Youri Tielemans in the second half. The build-up play was called out for handball but was waved off since it hit the knee of Ayoze Perez first.
Chelsea lacked rhythm throughout the match and lacked their usual spark on the pitch. The first half was quite evenly contested with the Londoners getting the better of the Foxes. However, the second half spelt the complete opposite especially following Tielemans’ goal.
Kasper Schmeichel pulled off two great saves to keep his team in the game but was beaten by Ben Chilwell in extra time. The goal would not stand due to offside and Leicester proceeded to be crowned the winners of the Cup at the end of 5 minutes of added time.
Jamie Vardy completes an individual milestone, having completed in every round of the cup, including the grassroots levels. The striker now has a winner’s medal to show for it, following an unbelievable rise to the top flight of English football.
Chelsea have now choked at the finals of the cup for the second year running. The Blues lost to London rivals Arsenal last year and to first-timers Leicester City this year. Both the teams headed into the finals as the underdogs and came out on top. They both were also the better teams on the day.
