Abby’s Apartment Crisis, Secret Crushes & Office Chaos — Not Suitable for Work Season 1 Premiere Explained

Mindy Kaling is back with another sharply written ensemble comedy, and this time she’s planting her flag in Murray Hill, New York. Not Suitable for Work, which premiered on Hulu on June 2, 2026, wastes absolutely no time throwing its five leads into gloriously messy situations — both at work and at home. Here’s everything that went down in the premiere, including the big eviction cliffhanger.

Not Suitable for Work: Overview

Meet the Gang

Hulu’s Not Suitable for Work centers around five work-obsessed twenty-somethings striving for professional success — and, if they have time, personal happiness. The core cast includes Ella Hunt as AJ, Avantika as Abby, Will Angus as Davis, Jack Martin as Josh, and Nicholas Duvernay as Kel — five neighbours whose lives become hilariously entangled from day one. This is Mindy Kaling doing what she does best — blending sitcom charm with modern millennial/Gen Z anxieties. Think Friends if the Friends had rent fraud problems and terrible bosses.

Premiere Ending Explained — Was Abby Evicted?

The short answer: almost, but not quite. AJ is living in Abby’s apartment illegally, which becomes a problem when Josh, hoping to move in with his girlfriend Vivian, rats them out to the building manager Antoine. It just so happens that Vivian dumps Josh almost immediately afterwards, and he tries to call off the eviction, but he’s too late.

As the episode ends, Antoine puts an eviction notice on Abby and AJ’s apartment anyway. The reprieve Josh tries to offer comes a beat too late — and the fallout sets up the messy second episode brilliantly. TVLine

Meanwhile, there’s steamy chemistry between Abby and celebrity client Austin Blanchett, making it clear this won’t be the last we’ve seen of him. Kel, on the other hand, is quietly spiralling — he drops out of med school without his parents’ permission, pursuing his true passion for acting. TVLineTVLine
