For over two decades, Netflix built its empire by being the thing cable TV wasn’t — on-demand, no ads on premium tiers, no appointment viewing. But this summer, all of that changes. Netflix is launching live TV channels on its platform for the very first time, and the deal with France’s TF1 Group is the most significant strategic shift the company has made in years.

What French Subscribers Are Actually Getting

Starting in Summer 2026, all Netflix subscribers in France will be able to access TF1’s five free-to-air channels and 30,000+ hours of content from the TF1+ streaming service at no additional cost to their existing Netflix subscription.

This includes daily dramas like Demain Nous Appartient and Ici Tout Commence, reality TV shows and talent competitions such as The Voice, high-end scripted series like Broceliande and Erica, and major live sports events — all without leaving the Netflix interface. OTTVerse

This imminent June rollout will mark the first time in Netflix’s history that it has become a carrier of linear channels from a third party. What’s on Netflix

Why This Is Such a Big Deal

This isn’t just a content licensing deal — it’s a strategic pivot. The deal transforms Netflix from a pure on-demand service into something resembling the cable packages it originally disrupted.

TF1 Group currently reaches 58 million monthly viewers through its broadcast channels and serves 35 million users on its TF1+ streaming service, while Netflix surpassed 10 million subscribers in France in 2022. Both sides desperately need each other. Traditional broadcast is bleeding viewers to streaming; streaming is hitting subscriber saturation ceilings.

Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters indicated that Netflix would first assess the success of the TF1 partnership before considering additional deals with other broadcasters — making France a live testing ground for the global future of streaming. TechSpot

Could This Come to Other Countries?

Almost certainly, if it works in France. Analysts predict this deal will “open the floodgates” for similar partnerships worldwide, as traditional broadcasters seek Netflix’s massive reach while the streaming giant needs fresh content to retain subscribers.

According to Wikipedia’s entry on TF1, the channel has been France’s most-watched private broadcaster since its privatisation in 1987 — making it an ideal partner for Netflix’s first live TV experiment.

The move also signals something bigger: the era of streaming versus traditional TV is ending. Now, they’re merging. For more streaming news and platform updates from around the world, visit TechnoSports.
