Destruction AllStars Servers Shut Down by Sony Without Warning

Destruction AllStars, the vehicular combat game from Lucid Games, has seen its online multiplayer servers shut down by Sony Interactive Entertainment. This leaves its remaining players without access to the game’s main mode.

Originally launched as a PlayStation 5 exclusive on February 2, 2021, the game aimed to be a standout multiplayer experience. Sony shifted its release strategy, offering it as a free PlayStation Plus title during February and March 2021, instead of the planned retail price of $69.99. Even with this accessibility, the game struggled to build a lasting player base, earning a Metacritic score of 60/100 at launch.

The Sudden Sunset of Destruction AllStars

The quiet shutdown of online support marks the end for a game that started its decline years ago. Sony hinted at its lack of commitment when they removed the title from the PlayStation Store on November 30, 2022.

By taking away the option for new players to buy the game, the publisher effectively stopped the flow of new participants needed to keep an arena brawler alive. Many who enjoyed the game’s unique mechanics felt frustrated by the absence of any official announcement about the server shutdown.

Players who dedicated time to unlocking cosmetics or leveling up their profiles can no longer access the progression systems tied to online play. Since the game heavily relies on its multiplayer framework, shutting down these servers essentially strips the title of its replayability. This situation reflects a growing concern about how major publishers handle games that depend on live-service infrastructure, according to recent coverage by TechCrunch.

Community Backlash and the Future of Live Service

This event reveals the ongoing reliability issues in the modern “Games as a Service” model. When a publisher shuts down servers, the lack of an offline option or community-hosted solution often makes a purchased game completely useless. This trend is becoming all too common in the industry, but Sony’s silence about this particular closure has drawn sharp criticism from advocates for better game preservation, according to recent coverage by The Verge.

The real question is: how much trust can players put in digital-only titles when servers can disappear on a whim? As the industry increasingly leans towards digital ecosystems, the risk of losing access to games grows. There’s a clear need for developers to integrate offline modes or server-transfer options before they cut support for legacy titles.
