Netflix’s First-Ever South African Supernovela ‘The Polygamist’ Is Here — And It Looks Like Unmissable Drama

South African television has a new heavyweight contender. Netflix’s most ambitious local production to date, The Polygamist, premieres globally on June 12, 2026 — and it’s already generating serious buzz across the continent and beyond.

The Polygamist on Netflix — Overview

What Is The Polygamist About?

At the centre of the story is Jonasi Gomora — a self-made CEO, banking mogul, and social media darling whose life looks flawless from the outside. But behind the polished image lies a web of lies, secrets, and four women whose lives are deeply entangled with his.

The series dives deep into themes of power, ambition, betrayal, and the emotional cost of desire — told through the perspectives of the women navigating Jonasi’s world. It’s soapy in the best possible way, with real dramatic depth underneath the glamour.

From Bestselling Novel to Global Screen

Thirteen years after it was first published, Sue Nyathi’s The Polygamist is finally making its way to global screens. First published in 2012, the novel follows Jonasi Gomora, a wealthy businessman whose carefully constructed empire begins to crack under the weight of tensions between his wives and mistresses.

Nyathi herself celebrated the news on Instagram: “For years we have spoken about it, the screen adaptation of The Polygamist. We are done talking, the series is here.”

The series is produced by Stained Glass Productions — the studio behind acclaimed African dramas like Uzalo, The Wife, and Ifalakhe.

Is There a Season 2 Already?

Netflix is already teasing more stories beyond the first season, hinting: “But every marriage has two sides. Part 2: Jonasi Gomora’s story is coming…” — suggesting the streamer has much bigger plans for the series.
