Netflix’s Barbaric Series: Everything We Know About the Deadpool-Meets-Game-of-Thrones Comic Book Adaptation

Netflix has officially greenlit Barbaric — a live-action adaptation of the best-selling Vault Comics series by Michael Moreci and Nathan Gooden — and if the source material is anything to go by, this one is going to be a gloriously unhinged ride. The announcement came as part of the 2026 Netflix Upfronts on May 13, confirming what had been quietly developing since 2024.

Described as Deadpool meets Game of Thrones, Barbaric has been one of the most acclaimed dark fantasy comics of the past five years. Now it’s heading to the world’s biggest streaming platform — and the team behind it is no joke.

What Is Barbaric Actually About?

The premise is deceptively simple and instantly compelling. Owen the Barbarian is a ruthless, foul-mouthed warrior who gets cursed — condemned to use his considerable capacity for violence exclusively in service of good. He wanders a brutal medieval realm accompanied by his talking Axe: a bloodthirsty weapon with a severe drinking problem (it gets drunk on blood) and a surprisingly strong moral compass. Owen also happens to despise witches — the very beings responsible for his curse — which makes it rather inconvenient when a young witch ends up as his unwilling travelling companion.

The official Netflix logline sums it up: a ruthless and crass barbarian is cursed to only use his violence for good, which sends him, his talking axe and a young witch on a road of self-discovery, redemption and revenge.

It’s darkly comic, hyper-violent, and deeply human in its own chaotic way — exactly the kind of story that, in the right hands, becomes cult television.

A Comic That Changed the Industry

Barbaric launched at Vault Comics in 2021 and promptly proved everyone who said fantasy comics were dead completely wrong. Issue #1 became an instant classic, spawning multiple variants, five volumes, a spin-off series (Queen of Swords), and a standalone one-shot. It’s currently on its fifth volume, with a new paperback edition due in August 2026.

Vault Editor-in-Chief Adrian Wassel called it the most important sword and sorcery series since Conan — high praise, but the comic’s sales history backs it up. For Netflix, it joins a strong roster of comic-to-screen adaptations including The Umbrella Academy, Sweet Tooth, and The Sandman.

The Team Behind It Is Seriously Stacked

Sam Claflin — who was attached to the project when Deadline first broke the news in 2024 — is officially listed as executive producer. Whether he also steps in front of the camera as Owen the Barbarian remains officially unconfirmed, but the speculation is hard to ignore.

What We Know (and Don’t Know Yet)

Barbaric is still in the early days of development at Netflix. No cast has been officially confirmed, no production start date has been announced, and no release window exists yet. But with this level of producer firepower and source material with a built-in, passionate fanbase, it’s moving with serious intent.

What Barbaric has going for it is rare in the comic adaptation space: it’s genuinely original, it doesn’t take itself too seriously, and it has a concept — cursed villain forced to do good against his will, with a sentient weapon as his moral guide — that nobody has quite done before on screen. That’s a genuinely exciting foundation.
