7 Must-Watch K-Dramas from 2016

Descendants of the Sun — The one that arguably broke the internet in 2016. A soldier and a doctor fall in love against the backdrop of dangerous humanitarian missions. Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo’s on-screen chemistry was so electric it translated into a real-life marriage. The slow-burn sub-couple of Jin Goo and Kim Ji Won only makes rewatching it even more rewarding.

Another Miss Oh — If you want a rom-com with actual emotional depth, this is it. Seo Hyun Jin plays Oh Hae Young — flawed, expressive, and wonderfully human — opposite Eric’s quietly guarded Park Do Kyung. It’s the kind of love story that feels messy and real rather than polished and perfect, and that’s exactly why it still resonates.

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo — Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, this one remains a comfort drama gold standard. Lee Sung Kyung and Nam Joo Hyuk’s playful, tender chemistry as athletes navigating first love is as fresh today as it was in 2016. Easily one of the sweetest romances in K-drama history.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo — Dark, devastating, and deeply addictive. IU plays Hae Soo, a modern woman transported to the Goryeo era, falling into the orbits of royal princes with tragic destinies. The fandom for this drama has only grown fiercer over time — a true cult classic with an ending that will haunt you.

Dear Fair Lady Kong Shim — A chaotic, warm-hearted rom-com starring Bang Minah and Namkoong Min. The drama has recently got renewed attention after Bang Minah married her co-star On Ju Wan in real life — proof that 2016 gave us not just fictional love stories but real ones too. Sweet, funny, and quietly underrated.

Dr. Romantic — The drama so good they made it three times. Han Suk Kyu as the legendary Dr. Kim leads a team of passionate doctors at a rural hospital, with Yoo Yeon Seok and Seo Hyun Jin delivering standout performances in Season 1. Equal parts heartfelt and hilarious — start from the very beginning.

Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (Goblin) — Perhaps the most culturally enduring drama of 2016. Gong Yoo as the immortal Goblin seeking the one woman fated to end his eternal existence is the stuff of legend. Its OST alone could make you emotional on a random Tuesday. The cinematography is breathtaking, the humour is warm, and the tears are absolutely inevitable.
