Episode 8 opens with Tommy struggling in Greg’s class after receiving heavy edits on his writing. Convinced he isn’t cut out for college, he begins to consider dropping out and explores becoming a cop instead, setting up a ride-along with Officer Donnie.

Greg initially tries to talk Tommy out of quitting but decides to stay involved, accompanying him during the ride-along. The turning point comes when Greg shifts from pushing advice to highlighting what Tommy is actually good at — pointing out specific moments from his writing that stood out. That moment changes everything, and Tommy begins to believe he might belong in college after all.

Elsewhere, Sunny talks to Walt about moving to New York. She’s conflicted because Archie is finally showing interest in their child. Meanwhile, Katie runs into Archie and confronts him about giving her only two days to decide about their relationship — it’s clearly awkward as she tells him she hopes he’s better to Sunny.

Did Sunny Turn Down New York? The Ending Explained

Yes — and it’s the moment the entire episode hinges on. Sunny confesses to Archie that Biotecha offered her a position, but she’s refusing it because he won’t be in New York City with her. There’s zero conversation about doing long distance, and he doesn’t bother to say that he’d move for her.

Archie is excited when Sunny tells him about the job, but then loses all that positive momentum by saying, “But that’s not where I am.” Never once does he offer to make his career fit around hers. Instead, she gives up a dream job for their family. Her roommate Mo’s immediate reaction — “Huge mistake! Take the job!” — perfectly mirrors what most viewers are feeling.

The decision is framed as emotional rather than logical. Sunny appears to understand that Archie would not make the same sacrifice for her — making the choice more concerning, because it suggests she is knowingly accepting an imbalance. FandomWire

This kind of emotional compromise is a deeply human pattern — what psychologists call anxious attachment, where the fear of losing connection overrides rational self-interest.

The Other Big Ending: Katie Tells Greg the Truth

After hearing Tommy speak about Greg’s support, Katie begins to reassess her own relationship with her father — and the episode ends with her deciding to tell Greg the truth about her involvement with Archie. The final shot pulls back to give Greg and Katie space, holding until Greg puts his arm around his daughter — there’s real hope in that moment. PRIMETIMER Fangirlish

Dylan’s subplot with student Eva — about the age-old tension between passion and practicality — adds further thematic weight to an episode that is fundamentally about the choices that quietly define a life.
