When a Hollywood musical biopic earns more in its first two days in India than Bohemian Rhapsody did in its entire theatrical run here, you stop and pay attention. The Michael Jackson biopic Michael is doing exactly that — and the story behind the numbers is fascinating.
Michael Box Office Collections in India: Day-by-Day Breakdown
| Day | India Gross |
|---|---|
| Previews | Rs. 1.70 crore |
| Friday (Day 1) | Rs. 4.50 crore |
| Saturday (Day 2) | Rs. 6.50 crore |
| 2-Day Total | Rs. 12.70 crore |
The film posted a strong 45% growth from Friday to Saturday, driven by solid walk-up business that exceeded advance booking projections. The opening weekend is on track to land around Rs. 20 crore in India — a remarkable achievement for the genre.
Why This Number Is Such a Big Deal
To truly understand how well Michael is performing, some context helps. Bohemian Rhapsody — the Queen biopic that grossed nearly a billion dollars worldwide — managed only around Rs. 7 crore in India across its entire run. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour collected Rs. 13 crore total in the country. Michael has already crossed that figure in just two days.
For a Hollywood musical biopic in India, this is genuinely historic territory.
Where Is India Watching Michael?
The film’s regional performance tells an interesting cultural story. South Indian circuits — particularly Tamil Nadu and Kerala — are leading the charge, followed by Karnataka. Mumbai comes in third. The Hindi belt, where Western pop music has traditionally had limited mass-market appeal, showed better-than-expected growth on Saturday but still lags behind.
This tracks with how Michael Jackson was loved in India: less for his music in a pop context, more for his iconic dancing — and dance-driven content has historically performed better in Mumbai and South India than in the North.
The Global Picture: A Potential USD 1 Billion Run
Worldwide, Michael is on course for an opening weekend north of USD 200 million. North America alone is projected to contribute USD 90–100 million, with the overseas weekend expected around USD 111 million by the studio. In the long run, a USD 1 billion global total is firmly within reach — which would make it one of the biggest music biopics in cinema history.
