Michael Jackson Biopic Storms Indian Box Office — Is This Hollywood’s Biggest Musical Hit in India Ever?

The King of Pop may have left the world in 2009, but his magic clearly hasn’t faded. The much-anticipated Michael Jackson biopic, simply titled Michael, has landed in Indian cinemas with a bang — and the opening day numbers are turning heads across the film trade.

Michael Box Office Day 1: India Collections at a Glance

The film collected approximately Rs. 6 crore (USD 650K) on its opening day in India, which includes Rs. 1.60 crore from Thursday previews alone. To put that in perspective, Bohemian Rhapsody — a global blockbuster in 2018 — grossed just Rs. 7 crore across its entire India run. Michael has nearly matched that figure in a single day.

That’s not just impressive — that’s a statement.

South India Loves MJ More Than the North — Here’s Why

One of the most fascinating trends from Day 1 is the regional split. Almost two-thirds of the opening day collections came from South Indian circuits, with Tamil Nadu–Kerala leading, followed by the Telugu states and Karnataka.

Why? In India, Michael Jackson was primarily known for his iconic dance moves, and traditionally, dance-centric films have performed better in Mumbai and South India while severely underperforming in the North, where English music remained largely a niche urban phenomenon.

It’s a cultural reality — and the box office reflects it perfectly.

Worldwide Numbers Are Simply Massive

While India puts up a solid fight, the global picture is on another level entirely. In North America, the film grossed around USD 40 million on opening day, tracking towards a USD 90 million opening weekend. The worldwide weekend total is projected to cross USD 200 million, with the film potentially targeting USD 1 billion in its full theatrical run.

As Wikipedia notes, Jackson remains one of the best-selling music artists of all time — so global curiosity around his biopic is hardly surprising.

What to Expect Next?

Saturday advances look good, though a significant jump isn’t guaranteed. Interestingly, Sunday could see a slight dip as metros tend to ease off then. How the film holds on Monday will be the real test of its long-term potential in India.
