Netflix’s Most Anticipated Sports Biopic Just Collapsed — Millie Bobby Brown Exits ‘Perfect’ and the Film Is Officially Dead

This one stings. A project that had been building excitement for years just fell apart at the seams — and the story behind its cancellation is almost as dramatic as the film itself would have been.

‘Perfect’ — What We Know at a Glance

What Happened?

Netflix’s highly anticipated biographical film Perfect has been officially scrapped. Millie Bobby Brown — who was set to star as Olympic gymnastics legend Kerri Strug — has exited the project citing creative differences with producers. To make matters worse, director Gia Coppola had also quietly departed the project prior to Brown’s exit. With both its lead star and director gone, Netflix had no path forward and pulled the plug entirely.

Neither Netflix nor Brown’s representatives offered a public comment on the situation.

Who Is Kerri Strug and Why Did This Film Matter?

If you watched the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, you already know why this story deserved a film. Kerri Strug is the American gymnast who, competing on a badly injured ankle during the vault final, stuck her landing anyway — clinching Team USA’s first-ever Olympic team gold medal. The image of her being carried off the mat by coach Béla Károlyi remains one of the most iconic and emotional moments in Olympic history.

The film was based directly on Strug’s own memoir, Landing on My Feet: A Diary of Dreams, and would have explored her journey and triumph against the odds. It was a story practically made for cinema — real, raw, and deeply human. Millie Bobby Brown had co-written the script alongside Ronnie Sandahl and was also attached as a producer through her PMCA Banner, which made her departure all the more significant.

A Long Road to Nowhere

The project had already had a turbulent journey before this final blow. Back in 2021, Thomasin McKenzie was originally attached to the lead role before the package stalled. Brown then took over and revived it — bringing renewed momentum and credibility to the project. Filming was scheduled to begin as recently as June 2026. Then it all unravelled.

It’s worth noting that despite this setback, Millie Bobby Brown’s relationship with Netflix remains very much intact. Coming off the record-breaking final season of Stranger Things, she still has a packed slate at the streamer — including Enola Holmes 3, Just Picture It, A Time Lost, and an adaptation of her debut novel Nineteen Steps. Will ‘Perfect’ Ever Be Revived?

Almost certainly not in its current form. Unless a completely new creative team picks it up and shops it to another studio, this version of the Kerri Strug biopic is shelved for good. A genuinely inspiring story — one that deserved to be told — remains untold for now.
