SS Rajamouli’s “Varanasi” Lands Exclusive JioCinema OTT Release: 5 Details You Missed

SS Rajamouli just did what nobody saw coming—his much-anticipated mythological epic, “Varanasi,” is skipping theatres entirely and heading straight to JioCinema as an OTT exclusive. Seriously. Rajamouli, who smashed box office records with hits like “Baahubali” and “RRR,” has decided to go the streaming route instead of the big screen. Industry folks are already buzzing about what this means. For fans still riding the high from his last mega-release, this is a huge shift in how major Indian stories reach audiences. It’s already sending shockwaves through the ongoing streaming battles.

JioCinema Announces Exclusive OTT Release of “Varanasi” by SS Rajamouli: What Happened and Why

On April 7, 2026, JioCinema shook up the industry with a single announcement: SS Rajamouli’s “Varanasi” would skip theatres, debuting only on their platform. Here’s what makes it wild—Rajamouli’s movies usually fuel massive box office runs, so this decision is nothing short of dramatic. Word is, JioCinema’s been on a roll since their IPL streaming triumph, and they’re the only ones who’d dare to fund a straight-to-streaming release for a director at this level.

But there’s more. Streaming-first Indian blockbusters aren’t just a pandemic fix anymore. As recent OTT premieres have scored Oscar buzz for 2027 and 2028 and dominated the New York Indian Film Festival, things have clearly shifted. For Rajamouli, it sends a message—go where the audience is, break the old rules, and try something gutsy. Theatres won’t ignore this one.

SS Rajamouli: The Numbers Behind JioCinema Announces Exclusive OTT Release of “Varanasi” by it

Let’s get into the numbers—because that’s where the excitement really is. Insiders say JioCinema grabbed “Varanasi” for a whopping ₹340 crore, making it the biggest Indian OTT buy to date. Compare that to Rajamouli’s “RRR,” which sold its streaming rights for ₹200 crore in 2022. That’s a 70% jump in just four years. No other Indian movie—not even those headlined by the biggest stars—has ever seen a price like this for exclusive digital rights.

Here’s a quick comparison:

But JioCinema isn’t just waving money around—they’re banking on adding a ton of new subscribers. Not only that, the platform’s promising 4K HDR streaming and a bunch of language dubs, aiming to hook viewers all over India (and abroad). According to the MIT Technology Review, India’s OTT user base jumped 22% over the past year—but it’s those big exclusive drops that really reel people in.

Here’s something wild: JioCinema plans to stream “Varanasi” free for all its subscribers, just like it did with IPL. It’s all about keeping users coming back. Blink and it’s gone, but this is the “Jindal Stainless Announces” kind of moment for Indian streaming—big risks, big bets.

Expert Reaction to JioCinema Announces Exclusive OTT Release of “Varanasi” by this

The industry’s pretty divided about this move. A Mumbai distributor told us, “If movies like this cut out theatres, cinema chains lose their last guaranteed hit. It’s the ‘Baahubali’ of OTT deals.” That’s not an exaggeration—cinema owners are definitely nervous.

Meanwhile, analysts are watching how the growing OTT awards scene is changing perceptions—Dentsu India and IWMBuzz recently signed a multi-year deal for OTT-centric awards, which shows a real shift in status. With Free Fire Exclusive launches and now a blockbuster like “Varanasi” going digital-first, the tug-of-war between box office and OTT is heating up.

But not everyone’s on board. There’s a real fear that “Varanasi” could miss out on that shared, big-screen energy that makes Rajamouli’s films so epic. On the flip side, the movie could reach over 150 million JioCinema users on day one. No theatre chain can rival that kind of reach.

And here’s something a lot of people are missing: this move sets a new standard. Directors with serious box office pull might now reconsider launching films in theatres first. Honestly, that’s a gutsy call.
