Why This Chip Factory Is a Big Deal for India

India Chip is a 60:40 joint venture between HCL Group and Taiwan’s Foxconn, set up as an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility at YEIDA in Greater Noida. The plant will produce display driver chips for digital screens — essentially the “brain” behind every display in phones, laptops, and cars — with 3.6 crore chips rolling out monthly at full capacity.

India is following the same path Taiwan, China, and Southeast Asia took — building backend packaging strength before scaling to full fabrication, a staged and realistic approach into the global chip value chain. The facility also benefits from its proximity to the upcoming Jewar International Airport, strengthening Greater Noida’s case as North India’s emerging semiconductor hub.
