Four Prahar Puja Timings

Date Confusion: February 15 or 16?

Many devotees wonder whether Mahashivratri 2026 falls on February 15 or 16. The answer: the main observance is February 15. Since Chaturdashi Tithi remains active during the night of February 15, the primary vrat (fasting) and puja are performed on that night, extending into the early hours of February 16.

The worship spans both calendar dates, but the spiritual observance begins on Sunday evening, February 15.

Spiritual Significance

Mahashivratri symbolizes the cosmic union of Shiva and Shakti—pure consciousness meeting divine energy. According to Hindu scriptures, this sacred night marks when Lord Shiva manifested as the Shiva Linga or performed his cosmic Tandava dance.

The Nishita Kaal (midnight period from 12:09 AM to 1:01 AM) represents peak spiritual energy when Shiva Tattva is most accessible to devotees. This 51-minute window is considered supremely auspicious for worship, meditation, and mantra chanting.

Fasting Rules and Diet

What to Avoid:

• All grains (wheat, rice, lentils)
• Onion and garlic (tamasic foods)
• Non-vegetarian food
• Alcohol and intoxicants

What’s Allowed:

• Fruits and fruit juices
• Milk and milk products
• Sabudana (sago) preparations
• Nuts and dry fruits
• Simple sattvic foods

Many devotees observe nirjala fast (no food or water) throughout the day and night, while others follow phalahar vrat consuming fruits and milk. The fast should be broken during Parana time on February 16 (6:59 AM – 3:24 PM), ideally before Chaturdashi Tithi ends at 5:34 PM.

Essential Puja Rituals

Preparation:

1. Take ritual bath in morning
2. Make Sankalp (spiritual pledge) to observe the vrat
3. Take second bath before evening puja
4. Visit Shiva temple or prepare home altar

Main Worship (Each Prahar):

• Abhishekam: Bathe Shiva Linga with water, milk, honey, curd, ghee
• Offerings: Bel Patra (wood apple leaves representing Shiva’s three eyes), Dhatura flowers, white flowers
• Chanting: “Om Namah Shivaya” mantra continuously
• Jagran: Stay awake entire night in meditation and devotion

Devotees who perform all four Prahar pujas receive immense spiritual merit. However, single worship during Nishita Kaal is also considered highly beneficial.

Famous Mahashivratri Celebrations

Top Temple Destinations:

• Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Varanasi: Grand festivities with massive crowds
• Mahakaleshwar Temple, Ujjain: Elaborate night-long rituals
• Somnath Temple, Gujarat: One of 12 Jyotirlingas hosting grand celebrations
• Isha Yoga Centre, Coimbatore: Modern spiritual gathering with night-long meditation programs

The Power of Night Vigil

Unlike celebratory festivals, Mahashivratri emphasizes silence, stillness, and inner transformation. The all-night Jagran (vigil) helps devotees tap into cosmic vibrations and spiritual awakening. Continuous chanting of “Om Namah Shivaya” purifies the mind and connects consciousness with the divine.

According to tradition, staying awake on this sacred night allows devotees to receive Shiva’s blessings for health, prosperity, spiritual clarity, and fulfillment of sincere wishes.

Conclusion

Mahashivratri 2026 on February 15 offers a profound opportunity for spiritual growth through fasting, meditation, and devotion. Whether performing elaborate four-Prahar pujas or simple Nishita Kaal worship, the key is sincere devotion and purity of heart.

Har Har Mahadev! Om Namah Shivaya!
