India has committed to purchasing $500 billion worth of American goods over the next five years as part of the new India-US interim trade framework. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal calls this a “conservative” figure, revealing what the world’s fastest-growing major economy will buy from its strategic partner.

According to Goyal, India already has $50 billion in Boeing aircraft orders alone, with an additional $30-40 billion in engine and spare part orders. This means the aviation sector will consume at least $100 billion of the total commitment—and companies like Tata are planning additional orders.

The Technology Push: AI and Data Centers

India’s Budget 2026 announced major initiatives for data centers, AI missions, and critical manufacturing—all requiring high-quality ICT products, Nvidia chips, and quantum computing machinery. With big tech firms investing heavily, Goyal expects 10 GW of data centers to emerge in India, creating massive demand for American technology equipment.

Energy and Raw Materials: The Constant Demand

India currently imports coking coal worth $17-18 billion annually for its steel industry. As steel production targets increase to 300 million tonnes, coking coal imports could reach $30 billion per year—products India has been importing since previous governments but now at unprecedented scale.

The Competitive Edge

The deal slashes US tariffs on Indian goods from 50% to 18%—the lowest among major exporters. China faces 33% tariffs, while Vietnam and Bangladesh pay 20%, giving India significant competitive advantage in textiles, apparel, leather, and other labor-intensive sectors.

Mission 500: The Bigger Picture

The framework aims to more than double bilateral trade to $500 billion annually by 2030. Currently importing $45-50 billion from the US yearly, India already sources $300 billion worth of products globally that could come from America—and that’s expected to grow to $2 trillion over five years.
