Report: NVIDIA rules the d-GPU market with a massive 80% dominance

We all know that graphics giants Nvidia and AMD have been facing a supply shortage of their cards since the mid-quarter of 2020. The companies believe that they will solve the issues with their supplies by the end of 2021. However, a recent research report posted by Jon Peddie reveals that Nvidia, despite being crippled by supply constraints, managed to ship more discrete graphics cards than AMD.

The report researched the GPU market share statistics for the fourth quarter of 2020 of the green team, which showed that despite ongoing stock/availability issues which have affected all hardware launches since the beginning of 2020, Nvidia still performed well.

The research also indicates that the installed/shipped GPU base will increase to 419 million units during 2020-2025, an understandable estimation given the increasing popularity of gaming. Though the PC market worldwide was crippled during the pandemic, it shows the signs of improving, and overall GPU shipments increased by 20.5% from the previous quarter.

Coming back to the research report, Intel’s shipment of chips increased by 20.5%, AMD’s shipments increased by 6.4% while NVIDIA saw a decline of 7.3%. Here are the highlights from the report:

  • AMD’s overall unit shipments increased by 6.4% quarter-to-quarter, Intel’s total shipments rose by 33.2% from the last quarter, and Nvidia’s decreased by -7.3%.
  • The GPU’s overall attach rate (which includes integrated and discrete GPUs, desktop, notebook, and workstations) to PCs for the quarter was
  • 113%, down -9.2% from last quarter.
  • The overall PC market increased by 30.25% quarter-to-quarter and increased 35.76% year-to-year.
  • Desktop graphics add-in boards (AIBs that use discrete GPUs) decreased by -3.90% from the last quarter.
  • Q4’20 saw an increase in tablet shipments from last quarter.

But, when focusing on the discrete graphics segment, the research found that NVIDIA GeForce GPUs account for 82% of the overall discrete GPU market share while AMD Radeon graphics cards account for 18%.

No matter how you look at it, it is still a huge difference between the two rivals. Currently, both are affected by supply constraints, but both have assured their customers that the situation will improve soon.
