About a year ago, Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona. But the summer transfer window came and went, and Barcelona’s financial situation deteriorated so much that they could not agree to the signing of a long-term target of the stature of Martinez.
The Argentinian recently sat down with Gazzetta dello Sport to talk about the interest from Barcelona, and how he reacted to the growing rumours linking him with a transfer to Spain:
“It’s true, I was in negotiations with Barcelona,” Martinez told the Gazzetta dello Sport.
“I was clear with [Antonio] Conte, I told him: ‘I am only thinking about Inter, this is not going to affect me’.
“However, it all belongs in the past. I am going to sign a contract extension with Inter.
“I don’t know when there will be an official announcement. Meanwhile, I play. My future is here, I see myself in Milan for a long time. I like everything about this city. The food, the fans, the team. I only have positive feelings.”
Martinez is in negotiations with Inter Milan regarding a new contract. The only final details that remain to be sorted out revolve around the removal or a change in the player’s current release clause which is worth €111 million.
Martinez is having a great season with the club, and was the hero of the most recent Milan derby, netting a brace to defeat city rivals AC Milan and cement their place at the top of the Serie A table for the time being.
