Pokémon GO Championship Series Cup Rules Overview

Meta-Defining Team Compositions

Core Team #1: Balanced Coverage

Oranguru + Gyarados + Alolan Marowak

This trio provides exceptional type coverage and handles most meta threats effectively. Oranguru, Gyarados, and Alolan Marowak are among the strongest creatures in the meta, working together to provide wide coverage against most opposing types.

Core Team #2: Ice Control

Oranguru + Runerigus + Walrein

This composition excels at shield pressure and defensive play, with Walrein dominating Dragons and Flying-types while Runerigus handles opposing Ghosts.

Top Individual Pokémon & Movesets

Goodra (Dragon)

Moveset: Dragon Breath + Aqua Tail + Power Whip

Goodra has outstanding bulk which factors heavily in its Championship Series Cup success, alongside its spammy moves with great type coverage across five different types. Dragon Breath with STAB makes it a powerhouse that counters most Dragons while Aqua Tail provides shield-baiting coverage.

Walrein (Ice/Water)

Moveset: Powder Snow + Icicle Spear + Earthquake

Since gaining access to a good moveset during January 2022 Community Day, Walrein has risen to top-tier status across various Battle League formats, shining brightest in the Championship Series Cup. Powder Snow generates energy rapidly for spammy Icicle Spear and devastating Earthquake coverage.

Arctibax (Dragon/Ice)

Moveset: Dragon Breath + Avalanche + Dragon Claw

Arctibax is a nightmare in mirror matches against fellow Ice and Dragon-types because it has Ice/Dragon typing with access to both move types but isn’t weak to Ice-types. This unique resistance profile makes it incredibly valuable for Dragon-heavy metas.

Gyarados (Water/Flying)

Moveset: Dragon Breath + Aqua Tail + Crunch

Gyarados’s unique combination of Dragon, Water, and Dark damage helps it dominate ALL Fire types and the vast majority of Dragon, Ghost, Psychic, and Ground types, covering three quarters of the entire format. Watch for Electric and Fairy weaknesses.

Charizard (Fire/Flying)

Moveset: Dragon Breath + Blast Burn + Dragon Claw

Dragon Breath makes Charizard uniquely special, blowing away most Dragons like Dragalge, Dragonair, Altaria, and Goodra, while Blast Burn’s sheer power handles Dusclops, Grumpig, Runerigus, Walrein, and Oranguru. Less bulky than Gyarados but with superior neutral damage output.

Alolan Marowak (Fire/Ghost)

Moveset: Hex + Bone Club + Shadow Ball

This unique typing provides exceptional Ghost and Fire coverage with minimal overlap. Hex generates energy quickly for spammy Bone Club, while Shadow Ball handles opposing Ghost-types effectively. Its resistance to Fighting, Normal, and Bug makes it surprisingly bulky.

Strategic Team Building Tips

Lead Considerations: Goodra and Gyarados make excellent leads due to their bulk and wide neutral coverage. They force shields early and set up favorable matchups.

Safe Switch Options: Walrein and Arctibax work as strong safe switches, handling Dragons and applying immediate shield pressure with their fast-charging moves.

Closer Picks: Charizard and Alolan Marowak excel in closer roles where their raw damage output can clean up weakened opponents without needing shields.

Type Coverage Priority: Ensure your team covers Dragon, Ice, Ghost, and Flying-types comprehensively. These dominate the restricted meta, so countering them is essential for consistent wins.
