Method 1: Steal a Horse (Fastest & Free)

The quickest way to get mounted is embracing your inner bandit. Right from the beginning, you’ll encounter NPC riders moving along the roads in Jianghu, and when you approach them, a Snatch Horse option will appear. Press F (PC) or R2 (PlayStation) to throw them off and claim their steed.

Warning: Stealing a horse will make the NPC hostile and start a fight, and if you beat them up and steal the horse successfully, a bounty will be placed on you. Local warriors will attack on sight, so be ready to sprint away immediately after your heist.

The upside? You earn the “Horse Thief” achievement and can sell stolen horses to Wen Pu in Qinghe for extra coins, turning your criminal enterprise into a profitable side hustle.

Method 2: Tame Wild Horses (Challenging but Rewarding)

You will often spot unowned horses while exploring, and if you find one, you can attempt to tame it by playing a minigame where you need to press a button at the right time until the steed agrees to let you ride it.

Where to Find Wild Horses: Head to ponds, lakes, and open fields. The area near Wildmane Ranch (north of General’s Shrine) features multiple wild horses gathered around water sources.

Taming Tips:

  • Use the “Veil of Stillness” Mystic Art to approach without alerting horses
  • The taming minigame requires pressing specific buttons as they appear on-screen
  • Success depends on timing and reflexes—expect multiple attempts
  • Failed attempts don’t permanently scare horses; wait for them to calm and retry

Successfully tamed horses become permanent mounts you can summon anytime. Better yet, you can tame multiple horses and sell extras to merchants for profit.

Method 3: Purchase from Horse Merchants

The legitimate route involves buying mounts from horse merchants scattered throughout Jianghu. You can purchase horses from the shop by pressing ESC, clicking Shop, heading to Appearance, and clicking the horse icon where you can purchase horses or other types of animals as mounts using Pearls, the premium currency.

Physical Merchants: Find the horse merchant at Wildmane Ranch, just north of General’s Shrine. Other merchants exist in major settlements throughout the map.

Premium Shop: Access unique-looking mounts with special abilities through the in-game shop using Echo Beads (premium currency). The Ghoststride mount is available via Draw for 160 Echo Beads per attempt.

How to Summon Your Mount

Once you own a mount:

PC: Press the 6 key on your keyboard PlayStation: Press Touchpad + Square Xbox: Press Toggle View + X

Your horse comes running immediately, ready to carry you across Jianghu. You can summon mounts almost anywhere except inside buildings or during certain quest sequences.

Managing Multiple Mounts

Access mount management through ESC → Appearance → Mounts. Here you can:

  • Switch between owned mounts
  • Customize mane, tail, and gear appearance
  • View mount stats and special abilities
  • Release unwanted mounts
  • Locate nearest mount merchant for selling

If you have a surplus of mounts available, you can sell them for extra coins to Wen Pu in Qinghe, Sundara Land, making horse collection a legitimate money-making strategy.

Special Mount Abilities

Premium and rare mounts offer unique bonuses beyond basic travel speed:

  • Faster traversal speeds
  • Special collection abilities
  • Exploration buffs
  • Unique visual effects and animations
  • Status symbol among other players

The Bottom Line

Getting your first mount dramatically improves the Where Winds Meet experience. Whether you steal one immediately, invest time taming wild steeds, or purchase premium options, mounted travel transforms the game from slow exploration into thrilling adventure. Start with theft if you need speed, then build your collection through taming and merchants as you progress.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I lose my mount when I get killed in Where Winds Meet?

No, mounts are permanently tied to your account once obtained. Death doesn’t remove mounts from your collection—you can immediately resummon your horse after respawning. However, if you stole a horse and have an active bounty, expect continued attacks from bounty hunters until you clear the bounty by paying fines at authorities or waiting for it to expire naturally. Your mount remains safe regardless of your criminal status.

Can I tame horses without the Veil of Stillness Mystic Art?

Yes, you can tame wild horses without Veil of Stillness, though it’s significantly harder. Horses spook easily when approached, often running away before you can initiate the taming minigame. Veil of Stillness makes approaching much easier by masking your presence. You can obtain this Mystic Art by completing certain side quests early in the game. If you haven’t unlocked it yet, approach horses very slowly from behind, crouch-walking to minimize detection, and be prepared for multiple failed attempts before successfully starting the taming sequence.
