The King of Pop’s legacy continues breaking records even decades after his passing. The first trailer for Michael, the highly anticipated Michael Jackson biopic, has made cinematic history by becoming the most-viewed music biopic trailer of all time—and it’s not even close.
Michael Jackson Record-Breaking Performance: By the Numbers
| Metric | Michael (2025) | Previous Record Holder |
|---|---|---|
| 24-Hour Views | 116.2 million | Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (96.1M) |
| Studio Record | Lionsgate’s biggest debut | 50% ahead of John Wick: Chapter 4 |
| Bob Marley Comparison | 116.2M | Bob Marley: One Love (60.1M) |
| Bohemian Rhapsody | 116.2M | Bohemian Rhapsody (57.6M) |
| Release Date | April 24, 2026 | N/A |
Why the Trailer Went Viral
Released by Lionsgate Films on November 6, 2025, the Michael trailer’s astronomical success stems from multiple factors. Casting Jaafar Jackson—Michael’s nephew—in the lead role immediately sparked curiosity among fans eager to see family resemblance and authenticity in the portrayal.
Director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer) brings heavyweight credentials, while producer Graham King (Bohemian Rhapsody) has proven expertise in music biopics that resonate with global audiences. The combination promises a comprehensive journey from Jackson Five prodigy to solo superstar.
Star-Studded Cast Brings the Jackson Era to Life
Beyond Jaafar Jackson’s transformative lead performance, the film features powerhouse actors bringing key figures to life:
- Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, the controversial patriarch whose strict management shaped his children’s careers
- Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, the family’s emotional anchor
- Miles Teller as John Branca, the entertainment lawyer who guided Michael’s business empire
This ensemble approach ensures Michael explores the complex family dynamics and industry relationships that defined Jackson’s unprecedented success.
Legal Complications Forced Major Rewrites
The film’s journey to theaters hasn’t been smooth. Significant delays and script revisions stemmed from a decades-old legal settlement between the Jackson estate and the Chandler family, whose 1993 allegations marked one of entertainment history’s most controversial chapters.
Original screenwriter John Logan reportedly structured the film’s third act around Jackson’s perspective during those allegations. However, producers discovered post-production that the settlement prohibited any dramatization of the Chandlers or their experiences.
This revelation forced Antoine Fuqua to conduct major rewrites and reshoots, restructuring substantial portions of already-filmed material. The legal compliance challenges delayed release but demonstrate the production’s commitment to navigating sensitive historical territory responsibly.
What This Means for Music Biopics
Michael‘s trailer performance signals massive audience appetite for authentic artist portrayals. Surpassing Taylor Swift’s record by over 20 million views in 24 hours proves Jackson’s enduring global influence transcends generations.
The film’s April 2026 release positions it for awards season consideration, following Bohemian Rhapsody‘s Oscar-winning blueprint. With controversy management, stellar casting, and record-breaking anticipation, Michael could redefine the music biopic genre while honoring one of pop culture’s most complex figures.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will the Michael Jackson biopic address the controversies surrounding his life?
Due to legal settlements, particularly with the Chandler family, the film cannot dramatize certain allegations from the 1990s. Major rewrites were required after filming to comply with these restrictions, suggesting the movie will focus primarily on Jackson’s artistic journey and musical legacy rather than controversial aspects.
Q: When will Michael be released in theaters?
Michael is scheduled for theatrical release on April 24, 2026. The film will be distributed by Lionsgate Films globally, with early buzz suggesting a wide release to capitalize on the record-breaking trailer interest.
