Netflix is set to deliver one of the most intense K-dramas of 2025 with As You Stood By, starring Squid Game‘s Lee Yoo Mi and Parasyte: The Grey‘s Jeon So Nee. The crime thriller, which premiered at the 30th Busan International Film Festival, explores two childhood friends driven to commit murder as their only escape from hellish realities. The newly released teaser offers a chilling glimpse into their desperate journey.

As You Stood By: Drama Overview

The Teaser That Shocked Viewers

The newly released teaser for As You Stood By wastes no time establishing its dark, suspenseful tone. The poster features Eun Soo (Jeon So Nee) and Hee Soo (Lee Yoo Mi) standing in different spaces but seemingly facing each other, with Eun Soo’s blurred, shocked expression and Hee Soo’s wounded face raising curiosity about the hellish reality they endured.

The teaser reveals visceral scenes of domestic violence, desperate plotting, and the psychological toll of living in constant fear. Viewers witness Hee Soo’s physical wounds and emotional scars, while Eun Soo—harboring her own childhood trauma—makes the critical decision to help her friend escape by any means necessary.

A Story of Friendship and Desperation

Based on Hideo Okuda’s novel “Naomi & Kanako,” the drama poses a question to save those trapped in a hellish reality and to everyone who turned a blind eye. The series tackles the painful reality that sometimes society’s indifference forces victims to take justice into their own hands.

The Characters

Cho Eun Soo (Jeon So Nee): A luxury-brand salesperson at a department store who harbors childhood trauma and resolves to help her friend Hee Soo, who is going through a similar painful experience. Jeon So Nee, fresh from her breakthrough role in Parasyte: The Grey, brings intensity to this morally complex character.

Cho Hui Soo (Lee Yoo Mi): Once a promising writer of children’s books, she now spends her days in the hell of her husband’s violence and comes to carry out a plan to kill him with Eun Soo. Lee Yoo Mi, known for her powerful performances in Squid Game and All of Us Are Dead, portrays a woman pushed beyond her breaking point.

No Jin Pyo (Jang Seung Jo): Hee Soo’s husband, who poses a significant threat to both women. The actor from The Frog and The Good Detective takes on this menacing role.

Jin So Baek (Lee Moo Saeng): The CEO of Jinkang Store, who discovers Hee Soo and Eun Soo’s plan and becomes their staunch supporter. Lee Moo Saeng (The Glory, Gyeongseong Creature) provides a crucial ally in the women’s darkest hour.

Director Lee Jung Rim’s Vision

Directed by Lee Jung Rim, known for her stylish direction in dramas like ‘Revenant’ and ‘VIP,’ the show features a fresh cast lineup. Lee’s previous work has demonstrated her ability to craft atmospheric, suspenseful narratives that keep viewers on edge while exploring complex moral questions.

Revenant, her previous Netflix collaboration, earned critical acclaim for its haunting visuals and psychological depth—qualities that promise to elevate As You Stood By beyond typical crime thrillers.

Why This Drama Matters

As You Stood By arrives at a crucial moment when conversations about domestic violence, societal complicity, and women’s agency are gaining global attention. The drama doesn’t shy away from asking uncomfortable questions: What happens when legal systems fail victims? How far would you go to save someone you love? When does self-defense become murder?

The series tells the story of two women who, to break free from a repeating cycle of hell, make the most desperate choice and stand together to reclaim an ordinary life.

The drama’s adaptation of Hideo Okuda’s acclaimed Japanese novel brings Korean sensibilities to a universal story of survival, friendship, and the desperate measures people take when trapped in impossible situations.
