Understanding Kombat Kodes

Kombat Kodes are three-digit codes entered on the versus screen before matches begin. Each player inputs their three-digit portion using low punch, block, and low kick buttons. These codes unlock special stages, hidden games, and gameplay modifiers.

Popular Kombat Kode Combinations:

033-564: Fight at The Pit 2
121-121: Battle at Shao Kahn’s throne room
212-212: Combat in The Wasteland
000-666: Access Goro’s Lair (hidden stage)
707-000: Player 1 takes quarter damage

These codes add incredible variety to your matches and unlock stages not normally accessible through regular gameplay.

The Freeplay Feature

After entering the unlimited kredits code, lose your next match intentionally, and “freeplay” will appear in the remaining kredits window. This gives you infinite continues without needing to repeatedly enter codes—perfect for marathon gaming sessions or practice mode.

Secret Characters and Bosses

While Mortal Kombat Trilogy includes 32 playable fighters from the start, accessing boss characters like Motaro, Shao Kahn, and secret fighters like Chameleon requires specific methods unlocked through the question mark menus. Once you’ve enabled the red and blue menus, you’ll find options to select normally unplayable characters.

According to GameFAQs, these hidden options transformed MK Trilogy into one of the most content-rich fighting games of the 90s, offering gameplay depth rarely seen on home consoles at the time.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Entering codes too slowly: The story screen timing window is incredibly tight. Practice the button sequences before attempting them in-game.

Wrong controller port: All codes must be entered using Controller 1. Controller 2 inputs won’t register for story screen cheats.

Forgetting audio confirmation: Always listen for the voice confirmation or sound effect. No audio means the code didn’t register—try again.

Why MK Trilogy’s Cheats Matter

In an era before DLC and patches, developers hid content within the game itself for players to discover. These cheats weren’t just shortcuts—they were rewards for curious gamers willing to experiment. The question mark menus alone contain dozens of options that fundamentally change how you experience the game.

From handicap matches to hidden minigames, MK Trilogy’s cheat system represents gaming’s golden age when secrets were shared on playgrounds and gaming magazines rather than instant Google searches.

Getting the Most From Your Cheats

Combine multiple Kombat Kodes for wild match variations. Try half-energy matches at Goro’s Lair, or enable player handicaps while fighting at The Pit 2. These combinations create unique challenges that keep the game fresh decades after release.

Experiment with the red and blue menu options once unlocked—you’ll discover features the developers never advertised, turning MK Trilogy into an endlessly replayable experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do Mortal Kombat Trilogy cheats work on all N64 versions?

A: Yes, these cheats work on all North American Nintendo 64 versions of Mortal Kombat Trilogy. However, timing is crucial for story screen codes—some players find certain N64 controller conditions affect input speed. PAL versions may have slight differences, so verify region-specific codes if playing European releases. The Kombat Kodes entered on the versus screen are universal across all N64 versions.

Q: Can I unlock Chameleon permanently in Mortal Kombat Trilogy N64?

A: Chameleon is a secret boss character that randomly appears during single-player mode on specific towers. While you cannot permanently unlock him for standard character select, accessing the red question mark menu (via the master cheat code) allows you to enable additional character options. Some versions include methods to fight Chameleon more frequently, but he remains intentionally mysterious—part of MK Trilogy’s enduring appeal is hunting these rare encounters.
