David Alaba has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid when his contract with Bayern Munich expires. The heat around the Austrian’s potential switch has died down a bit. However, Fabrizio Romano has outlined the main reason behind it in his Here We Go podcast on Patreon.

Negotiations between Alaba’s agent and Real Madrid are still progressing. The player’s demands of a €12 million salary per season is one of the main reasons why he refused to stay at Bayern Munich, and also why Madrid are finding it a bit difficult to wrap up talks quickly.

All that said, things are made easier considering that Alaba actually dreams of playing for Madrid and has an inclination towards the club. He has spent the last decade with Bayern Munich and has emerged as one of their best players in that time.

The Austrian has managed to win everything with the Bavarians and is looking for a new challenge. Bayern did everything in their power to try and convince Alaba to stay at the club, but he wanted to explore new projects.

It is hence that a move to Spain, where lie pastures anew, is preferable for the player.

Liverpool are the only other club interested in Alaba right now, but whether they are willing to pay his sky-high wages is a very important question that must be answered before a deal is considered.
