Squadron 42: The Biggest AAA Game After GTA 6

Squadron 42 is on track for a 2026 release, with Chris Roberts saying, ‘Aside from GTA 6, it’s probably the AAA game with the biggest budget.’ The single-player space combat experience promises unprecedented scale and production value.

“Top Gun Meets Star Wars” Vision

Roberts describes Squadron 42 as combining the thrilling aerial combat of Top Gun with the epic space opera storytelling of Star Wars, creating what he believes will be a groundbreaking gaming experience.

What Makes Squadron 42 Special

The game promises to deliver:

  • Hollywood-level production with AAA budget rivaling major blockbusters
  • Immersive space combat combining dogfighting and capital ship battles
  • Cinematic storytelling featuring high-profile voice actors
  • Cutting-edge graphics powered by advanced game engine technology

Strategic Release Planning

Unsurprisingly, Squadron 42’s launch will also be timed to avoid GTA 6. This strategic positioning aims to maximize market impact without directly competing with Rockstar’s highly anticipated release.

Hopes for GTA 6-Level Impact

Roberts envisions Squadron 42’s launch becoming a major gaming event, hoping it will generate excitement comparable to GTA 6’s anticipated release. This ambitious goal reflects the team’s confidence in their decade-long development effort.

Star Citizen Full Release Still Years Away

While Squadron 42 targets 2026, the 1.0 version of Star Citizen for sometime in 2027 or 2028 continues the project’s extended development timeline. The persistent universe game remains one of gaming’s most ambitious projects.
