OpenAI Gives 5 Lakh Free ChatGPT Licenses to Indian Students

OpenAI has announced a groundbreaking ‘India-first’ Learning Accelerator programme, marking one of the company’s most significant commitments to the country’s education sector. The initiative promises to revolutionise AI-powered learning by distributing half a million free ChatGPT licenses alongside substantial research funding, positioning India at the forefront of educational AI adoption.

The programme launches in collaboration with prestigious institutions including IIT-Madras, the Ministry of Education, and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), ensuring comprehensive reach across India’s educational ecosystem.

Revolutionary AI Tools for Education

Teachers will gain access to advanced tools for lesson planning and classroom engagement, while students will benefit from features such as “Study Mode” and interactive quizzes. The premium ChatGPT access enables educators to create personalized learning experiences and streamline administrative tasks.

The research partnership with IIT-Madras will examine how AI tools influence teaching practices, learning outcomes and cognitive development, with findings made public to guide both education policy and future product design.

Leah Belsky, OpenAI’s Vice-President of Education, emphasized that “This is critical to our mission of ensuring AI benefits humanity”, highlighting the initiative as one of the company’s largest education investments in India.

Bridging India’s Digital Divide

The programme specifically addresses accessibility challenges by ensuring ChatGPT is optimized for basic smartphones and supports 11 Indian languages, a move aimed at narrowing the country’s digital divide. This inclusive approach ensures students from diverse economic backgrounds can benefit from AI-powered learning tools.

The announcement coincides with OpenAI’s broader India expansion plans, including opening its first India office in New Delhi later this year and launching an India-specific subscription plan priced at ₹399 per month, with UPI payment integration.

Additionally, OpenAI has partnered with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to establish the OpenAI Academy, an AI literacy programme, further cementing its commitment to India’s digital transformation in education.
