In a dramatic turn during the second minute of injury time, Patrik Schick emerged as the hero for Bayer Leverkusen, preserving the team’s season-long undefeated streak. Under Xabi Alonso’s guidance, Leverkusen has now gone 35 games without a defeat, setting a new record in German football. This historic run was nearly halted by an unexpected challenge from Qarabag, who threatened to end their impressive streak.

This season, Leverkusen’s performance in the Bundesliga has been nothing short of spectacular, establishing a 10-point lead over their closest rivals, Bayern Munich. Despite their consistent domestic success, they faced a potential upset against Azerbaijan’s Qarabag in the Europa League’s round of 16 first leg match on Thursday.

Qarabag took everyone by surprise, securing a 2-0 advantage in the first half with goals from Yassine Benzia and Juninho. The situation looked bleak for Leverkusen until Florian Wirtz managed to score in the 70th minute, and Patrik Schick’s last-minute equalizer during injury time salvaged their unbeatable streak.

Despite their comfortable lead over Bayern in the Bundesliga, a loss in Azerbaijan could have dampened their spirits. Leverkusen is gearing up for the second leg of the match against Qarabag in Germany, following their upcoming Bundesliga fixture against Wolfsburg this weekend.
