The 70th National Film Awards ceremony for the year of 2022, to honor the best Indian films of 2021, was held on Tuesday at Vigyan Bhawan here. Speaking on the occasion, President Droupadi Murmu felicitated the winners of various awards and acknowledged their contributions to the film industry.

The ceremony also saw the legendary actor Mithun Chakraborty being honored with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Their names are announced winners before August 16, 2024.

Best Feature Film was given to Malayalam movie ‘Aattam’ directed by Anand Ekarshi. Rishab Shetty was honored with the Best Actor award for his performance in Kantara, a film that stood out as it took audiences through new ways of storytelling.

Two winners of the Best Actress award in a Leading Role are Nithya Menen from the Telugu movie Thiruchitrambalam and Manasi Parekh for the Gujarati film Kutch Express. While Sooraj R Barjatya was conferred with the Best Director award for Uunchai.

The National Awards were put on hold for a year, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year, for the first time ever, the awards announced Alia Bhatt and Kriti Sanon as co-winners of the Best Actress trophy for Gangubai Kathiawadi and Mimi respectively while Allu Arjun walked away with the Best Actor honor for Pushpa: The Rise. It was streamed live on the official social media handles of the Press Information Bureau (PIB) for those who could not attend.

During his acceptance speech, Mithun Chakraborty reflected on his early career, humorously recalling how receiving his first National Film Award for Mrigayaa in 1976 led him to believe he was as talented as Al Pacino. The ceremony concluded with the National Anthem, celebrating the achievements and cultural significance of Indian cinema. This event highlighted the immense talent, dedication, and creativity within the industry, making it a memorable occasion in the history of Indian cinema.
