Football Reinvented: The Football League Indigenous to Kerala

Super League Kerala is poised to transform football for Malayalees everywhere. It transcends being merely a competition; it’s a celebration of the sport, reimagined for a new era. This groundbreaking initiative promises to usher in a fresh chapter in football and unveil opportunities for it to become a viable career path. With six dynamic franchises set to compete in thrilling head-to-head matches, the football extravaganza will unfold in a league format, commencing officially in August 2024 for a two-month duration. Group Meeran leads this initiative with pride, demonstrating its commitment to elevating the beautiful game in our state.

Clubs Participating In The Super League Kerala

Kochi witnessed the grand unveiling of the six franchises participating in the inaugural season of Super League Kerala (SLK), a bold initiative aimed at nurturing football at the grassroots level. The event took place on Friday evening amidst much fanfare.

These six clubs, representing the cities of Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Kannur, are as follows:

  3. Thrissur Roar FC
  4. Calicut Sulthans FC

1. Thiruvananthapuram Kombans FC

Introducing Thiruvananthapuram Kombans FC, representing the vibrant city of Thiruvananthapuram in the inaugural season of Super League Kerala. The ownership of this esteemed club boasts a diverse and illustrious lineup, including Gowri Lakshmi Bayi, a member of the esteemed royal family of Travancore. Alongside her, the ownership roster features Dr. Mohamed Ilyas Sahadulla, the Chairman and Managing Director of KIMS Hospital, K.C. Chandrahasan, the Managing Director of Kerala Travels, and T.J. Mathews, who also serves as the co-owner of Kovalam FC. Together, this dynamic group brings a wealth of experience and passion to the forefront, embodying the spirit of Thiruvananthapuram and its love for football.

2. Kochi Pipers FC

Introducing Kochi Pipers FC, hailing from the bustling city of Kochi and set to make waves in the inaugural season of Super League Kerala. This dynamic club is under the ownership of none other than Indian tennis legend Mahesh Bhupathi, who also serves as the CEO of SGSE. With Bhupathi at the helm, Kochi Pipers FC embodies a fusion of sporting excellence and entrepreneurial spirit, poised to leave an indelible mark on the football landscape of Kochi and beyond.

3. Thrissur Roar FC

Introducing Thrissur Roar FC, proudly representing the vibrant city of Thrissur in the inaugural season of Super League Kerala. This exciting venture boasts significant involvement from Kaz Patafta, the chairman and chief executive officer of A-League powerhouse Brisbane Roar FC, who serves as a major stakeholder in Thrissur Roar FC. Joining him as co-owners are Benoit Joseph of Magnus Sports and Mohammed Rafeeq of Nusym Technologies. Together, this esteemed group brings a wealth of expertise and passion to Thrissur Roar FC, setting the stage for an electrifying journey in the world of football.

4. Calicut Sulthans FC

Introducing Calicut Sulthans FC, proudly representing the vibrant city of Kozhikode in the inaugural season of Super League Kerala. The esteemed ownership of this club is held by V.K. Mathews, a prominent tech entrepreneur and the Chairman of IBS Group. Under Mathews’ guidance, Calicut Sulthans FC is poised to make a significant impact in the realm of football, reflecting the innovation and dynamism synonymous with Kozhikode.

5. Malappuram FC

Introducing Malappuram FC, proudly representing the vibrant locale of Malappuram in the inaugural season of Super League Kerala. This exciting venture is co-owned by a trio of influential figures, including V.A. Ajmal, the Managing Director of Bismi Group; Dr. Anvar Ameen Chelat, associated with SAT Tirur FC and Grand Hypermarkets; and Baby Neelambra, serving as the President of the Saudi Indian Football Forum. With this diverse and dynamic ownership team at the helm, Malappuram FC is poised to showcase the rich footballing talent and passion inherent to the region.

6. Kannur Squad FC

Introducing Kannur Squad FC, representing the vibrant city of Kannur in the inaugural season of Super League Kerala. This exciting football venture is co-owned by a distinguished group of individuals, including M.P. Hassan Kunhi, the Director of Kannur International Airport Ltd; Mibu Jose Nettikadan, the Managing Director of Castle Group in Doha; Praveesh Kuzhuppilly, a Director at Asset Homes; and Shameem Backer, a promoter of Wayanad FC. With this diverse and dynamic ownership team, Kannur Squad FC is poised to make a significant impact on the footballing landscape, showcasing the talent and passion inherent to Kannur.
