The FIFA World Cup is the most prestigious competition in all of football, with players across the globe putting everything on the line every four years to simply qualify. And in this article, we will be taking a look at the five players who have played five editions in their career.

5 players that have made 5 World Cup appearances

Antonio Carbajal

After making it to five World Cups in his career, the Mexican goalkeeper was named El Cinco Copas. He didn’t have the best international record though, conceding 25 goals in 11 games.

Rafael Marquez

Marquez was one of the most reliable players in Mexico’s squad during his playing days. He spent seven years with Barcelona, and went to five editions of the prestigious tournament between 2002 and 2018.

Lothar Matthaus

Matthaus might go down as one of the greatest German footballers of all-time. He holds the record of playing the most number of World Cup games, and went on to win the trophy in 1990.

Lionel Messi

With the Albiceleste, Lionel Messi has made it to the finals of the grandest tournament in the world, only to fall short against Germany. He will be hoping to turn things around this time, in what could be the final World Cup of his career.

Cristiano Ronaldo

At 37, Cristiano Ronaldo might be heading into the final World Cup of his career as well. The Portugal captain has guided his country to the Euros, and with a strong squad behind him, will be hopeful of putting up a strong challenge as he hopes to break more records in football.
