The 4th Test between India and Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad got underway on March 9, 2023, with both teams looking to gain the upper hand in the series.

Here are some key takeaways from Day 1 : 4th Test , India vs Australia

  1. Usman Khawaja’s unbeaten century: Usman Khawaja showed great character and patience to score his 13th Test century, remaining unbeaten on 104 off 251 balls. His innings was studded with 15 boundaries, and he was the anchor of the Australian innings.
  2. Head and Green’s attacking approach: Travis Head and Cameron Green showed positive intent and attacked the Indian bowlers from the outset. Their attacking approach paid dividends, as they scored 32 and 49 runs respectively, and put Australia in a strong position.
  3. Rohit Sharma’s proactive captaincy: Rohit Sharma’s captaincy skills were put to the test on a flat pitch, and he responded with proactive decision-making. He introduced Ravichandran Ashwin early into the attack, and brought Mohammed Shami back into the attack when he needed a wicket. He also set unusual fields to keep the Australian batsmen guessing.
  4. Rohit Sharma’s animated chat: During the drinks break in the last session of Day 1, Rohit Sharma had an animated chat with the Indian cricketers. He was seen pointing towards the scoreboard, and gesturing to keep pushing. His energy and enthusiasm seemed to have a positive impact on the Indian team.
  5. India’s mixed bowling performance: India’s new-ball bowlers, Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav, were off-colour in the first 10 overs, but Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja put the brakes on the scoring rate. However, they failed to make inroads in the second session, and it was only after Rohit Sharma made some proactive decisions that they got back into the game.
  6. Australia’s strong position: Despite losing four wickets, Australia ended Day 1 in a strong position, with a score of 255/4 in 90 overs. Cameron Green was unbeaten on 49, and he will look to push the score further on Day 2.
