**1. Is God Is** *Cast: Tessa Thompson, Janelle Monáe, Mykelti Williamson | Dir: Aleshea Harris* The most talked-about film on this list. Based on playwright Aleshea Harris’s acclaimed 2018 stage work — and marking her feature directorial debut — this revenge thriller follows two sisters on a brutal mission against the father who scarred them, acting on their dying mother’s wishes. With Tessa Thompson and Janelle Monáe leading the charge, this one has awards-season energy written all over it.

**2. Obsession** *Cast: Megan Lawless, Curry Barker, Inde Navarrette | Dir: Curry Barker* Bear uses a supernatural toy called the One Wish Willow to make his childhood friend Nikki fall in love with him — and deeply regrets it almost immediately. What begins as a romantic fantasy curdles fast into something terrifying as Nikki’s obsession spirals out of control. A clever, creepy little horror film that plays on the dangers of manufactured love.

**3. In the Grey** *Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Henry Cavill | Dir: Guy Ritchie* The biggest mainstream release of the week. Guy Ritchie reunites with his signature high-octane style as a team of elite undercover operatives attempts to steal back a billion dollars — only to find the mission far deadlier than advertised. With Gyllenhaal and Cavill sharing the screen, this action thriller is the safest crowd-pleasing bet of the four.

**4. Driver’s Ed** *Cast: Sam Nivola, Kumail Nanjiani, Molly Shannon | Dir: Bobby Farrelly* A gang of high school students steals their school’s driver’s ed car in a madcap attempt to reunite a senior with his college girlfriend. Pure chaotic fun from Bobby Farrelly, whose comedy DNA is all over this one. Think road trip gone spectacularly wrong — light, fast, and perfectly timed for a weekend laugh.
