2026 Commonwealth Games

2026 Commonwealth Games : The 2026 Commonwealth Games, set to be hosted by Glasgow, have undergone a significant transformation, and not in a way that bodes well for India’s medal prospects. In a bid to streamline the event and manage costs, 13 sports, including some of India’s strongest suits, hockey, cricket, wrestling, and badminton, have been dropped from the roster. These cuts are part of a broader downsizing following Victoria, Australia’s withdrawal from hosting the event due to budgetary concerns.

Let’s have a look into more details : 2026 Commonwealth Games

The Impact on India’s Medal Hopes

India has a rich history of excelling in many of the now-axed sports. Wrestling, hockey, badminton, and cricket have contributed heavily to India’s Commonwealth Games (CWG) medal tally over the years. The exclusion of these sports is a massive blow to the country’s chances at the upcoming event.

Here’s a look at how India’s key sports have fared in the past and why their exclusion is so significant:

  • Hockey: India’s men’s and women’s teams have consistently performed well, with the men’s team recently securing silver in the 2022 edition. Over the years, both teams have secured multiple medals, making hockey a key sport for the country’s success at the CWG.
  • Wrestling: India’s wrestling team has been a dominant force, regularly clinching medals, with stars like Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat leading the charge. In total, India has bagged an impressive 114 wrestling medals, including 49 golds. This exclusion represents a significant loss for India’s medal tally.
  • Badminton: With 31 medals to its name, including 10 golds, India has built a strong legacy in badminton. Players like P.V. Sindhu have been instrumental in keeping India on the CWG podium. The removal of badminton from the roster will undoubtedly impact India’s chances of maintaining its stronghold in the sport.
  • Cricket: After making its debut at the CWG in 2022, cricket, especially women’s cricket – was seen as a sport where India could grow its medal haul. India’s women’s team claimed a silver in their debut year, and the exclusion of cricket is a setback for the nation’s emerging dominance in this global sport.

A Leaner 2026 Commonwealth Games: Glasgow Steps In

Initially, Victoria was slated to host the 2026 CWG, but escalating costs – from an original budget of $2.6 billion to nearly $7 billion, forced the Australian state to pull out. Glasgow, which had successfully hosted the 2014 edition, stepped in to save the Games. However, this rescue comes at the cost of a significantly reduced sports program, with only 10 sports making the cut for 2026.

The sports that will feature in the 2026 Commonwealth Games include athletics, swimming, boxing, judo, weightlifting, cycling, netball, lawn bowls, 3×3 basketball, and artistic gymnastics. While these sports will attract their own fanbase, the absence of some of the most popular and medal rich events, particularly for India, will be keenly felt.

The Financial and Logistical Challenges

The decision to trim the number of sports stems largely from financial constraints. The event will now take place across just four venues in Glasgow, compared to the larger and more expansive hosting of previous editions. This move not only limits the scope of the Games but also aims to manage operational risks and costs. The exclusion of sports like table tennis, squash, and shooting, other strongholds for India, further diminishes the country’s medal chances.

A Missed Opportunity for Indian Athletes

For many Indian athletes, the Commonwealth Games provided a vital platform for international recognition and success. The axing of sports where India has historically excelled leaves a gap in the opportunity for these athletes to shine on the world stage. While India will now likely shift its focus to other international events like the Asian Games and the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games have long been a stage where Indian athletes have made their mark.

The absence of wrestling, badminton, and cricket, in particular, removes a familiar hunting ground for India’s athletes. As the country grapples with this sudden shift, it will be interesting to see how the nation recalibrates its sporting focus.

The downsized 2026 edition in Glasgow represents a pivotal moment for the Commonwealth Games Federation, which is aiming for a more sustainable model for future events. While this restructuring might benefit smaller host nations by reducing financial burdens, the absence of key sports could dampen enthusiasm and viewership, especially from sporting powerhouses like India.

India, with its tradition of excellence in the now excluded sports, faces an uphill battle in adapting to this new format. As Glasgow prepares for the leaner, 10 sport Games, Indian fans and athletes will need to look toward other platforms to continue showcasing the nation’s sporting prowess.
